Today is tough day. We lost a pillar of our department, @HowardU and the economic profession. A mentor to countless and an advocate for all.
@WSpriggs we are forever indebted to your leadership.
Please keep the Spriggs family in your thoughts.
I have some sad news to report…longtime economist Bill @WSpriggs, who headed @HowardU’s economics department and worked at the @AFLCIO, has transitioned to an ancestor. I just saw him at graduation two weeks ago. Bill was my go-to guy on @tvonetv and #RolandMartinUnfiltered. RIP
#BlackHistoryMonth is a reminder to uplift policies, research, and leaders like @GEDanielsJr & @LoriDorfman, who are dismantling structural racism and advancing health equity. @Policies4Action
We must continue to uplift Black voices during BHM and beyond.

Those who tried college but didn't graduate, have lower incomes. Great work from my @HowardEcon colleague @GEDanielsJr , @HowardUGESA Jeffrey Galloway and @SFSU@VenooKakar using the Survey of Consumer Finance to explain who holds student debt.

America ran a bad experiment on the Gen X and Millennials, what if colleges were tuition driven. It failed. So, an immediate issue is how to make them whole compared to previous generations. Now we must return to the old model: the public supports higher education.
Me (nervously at the back of the room):
What about the students just now taking out loans at the start of their college career, or those who will start next year, or the next…?

Upwardly mobile Black and Hispanic students, who come from families with no wealth, must borrow heavily to attain high incomes. So, an income cap on debt forgiveness has the perverse effect of punishing over achieving students of color who borrow to pay for their boot straps.
The income cap on student debt relief, as shown by my @HowardEcon colleague @GEDanielsJr and @SFSU@VenooKakar may appear counterintuitive, but high income white children who maintain their class status don't need to borrow for college. 1/2
From my @HowardEcon colleague @GEDanielsJr@HowardUGESA Jeffrey Galloway and @SFSU@VenooKakar while $10k student debt relief is welcome, clearly it is not large enough relative to the debt outstanding to be inflationary https://t.co/6qgLdD2jiZ
High-earning Hispanic & Black borrowers would be most impacted by an income cap on student debt relief; they have more student debt on avg than White borrowers for incomes over $127K https://t.co/rN563TLNMT @Policies4Action@GEDanielsJr@SFSU@HowardU@HowardEcon#studentloans
