Quick note from our team on our latest merch drop:
Most of this wasn't really our idea...it kind of all came from you. Being a Gen.G fan has always meant being one of the quieter ones in the room…I always joke that if you go to the smoking section at any of our matches, you'll see the vast majority being Gen.G fans quietly worried about the next game no matter what the score is.
We're not the biggest fanbase and we never really have been. And wherever you are, fans consistently tell us that they've had that moment when they look around and it feels like everyone's repping somebody else. So when the team was working on this, it wasn't really a "let's make a cool jersey" thing. It was more like how do we make it easy for our people to actually find each other? So you can spot each other in a crowd, and so the players can look up and know exactly who showed up for them, especially internationally when the room we enter often isn't ours.
We wanted to start taking steps to change that, and honestly the loud route was never going to work for us. Chants and all that doesn't fit how the LCK works (or honestly there's a lot of restrictions for noisemakers...), and it's just not the room for it. So we landed on that if we're not going to be the loudest, let's at least be the easiest to find.
You don't cut through a loud room by being louder... you cut through by being the thing people lock onto.
The other big thing you kept telling us is you didn't want a jersey that only makes sense on game day, you wanted stuff you'd actually wear. So we went all the way lifestyle for this one so anyone can throw it on, and the monogram's on there but it's quiet. Most people won't even notice but our fans will and that's who matters.
The clover I really love....four-leaf clovers are rare, which is kind of us. In general, we stopped treating being smaller like it's something to apologize for and started treating it like the point. Rare is the whole reason it works.
The lightstick is also the key here...it's been out for a bit now, but I don't think we ever really gave you a reason for it. I still remember a heartfelt letter I got from a fan in Vietnam who couldn't get a ticket near the stage...that person worried that our players weren't able to see the amount of support they had for them. So that's why we made the lightstick...on a game day, you've got the jersey on and the lightstick up..that's what makes you easy to spot in the building for our players. It's what lets the players look up and actually find you from across the arena/stadium wherever we are playing.
The jersey is everyday, the lightstick makes sure that our players can see you. That's what the point of the "show your light" campaign means.
One note on the drop. Members got first access. Not as a wall, just as a thank you to the people who've been showing up the longest. If you're not one, you're right behind them and nobody's getting locked out.
Anyway...most of this is really just us doing what you've been telling us to. This is our way of showing we hear you and we see you.
