I am deeply saddened by the reports of deaths and injuries - including of journalists and medical personnel - connected to protests and street demonstrations in Kenya.
I urge the Kenyan authorities to exercise restraint, and call for all demonstrations to take place peacefully.
@FAO at the forefront to reduce #El_Niño impacts.
During the briefing on the situation organized by @rghelani today, I pledged for the $360 million Regional Response and Preparedness Plan #ERRP.
We need to join forces to restore #agrifood security & livelihoods in #SouthernAfrica
The 2023/24 El Niño event, which helped fuel a spike in global temperatures and extreme weather around the world, is now showing signs of ending. There is likely to be a swing back to La Niña conditions later this year.

Floods driven by #ElNiño have ravaged Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania and other parts of East Africa, causing significant loss of life and disruption.
We're working with partners and local authorities to intensify relief efforts and remain steadfast to support those most vulnerable.
Imagine being a child and surrounded by high waters.
Women, children, and people living with disabilities are the most vulnerable to disasters.
Huge appreciation to first responders who prioritize their needs.

Good news.
@UNReliefChief is releasing an extra $13.5 million from @UNCERF to strengthen the response to El Niño, bringing the total allocations to over $60 million globally.
This will help Governments & communities in Southern Africa address the worst impacts of the drought.
#ElNiño is intensifying weather extremes, affecting 30M people in Southern Africa with the harshest mid-season drought in over a century.
I’ve allocated $13.5M from @UNCERF to bolster early action & response and enhance community resilience against the climate crisis.
It is now the second time Kenya is affected by floods in less than a year.
We need emergency assistance like the one provided by @KenyaRedCross in support of Government efforts.
But we also need longer term solutions to the climate crisis.
There is now a 62% chance that La Niña will arrive by June-August, according to @NOAAClimate.
It could bring floods in West Africa and South-East Asia, droughts in Eastern Africa and a stronger Atlantic hurricane season.
For millions of people, El Niño means it’s harder to put food on the table. In Indonesia, the drought led to poor harvests and prices hikes, amplified by export bans. This @Reuters story shows how the Government is responding by providing subsidised rice.
The integrated programmes and multi-usage water projects implemented by @UNICEF and partners are some of the best practices I’ve witnessed in Madagascar, bringing cost efficiency and sustainable impact.
Protecting communities ahead of disasters saves lives and money. El Niño-induced disasters can be predicted months in advance.
@FAO is working with Governments to help vulnerable communities through anticipatory action and social protection.
The risk of famine is increasing every day in Gaza. Time is running out.
Three months after the beginning of the conflict, we urgently need a humanitarian ceasefire.
The international humanitarian community has a single, clear message:
This has to stop immediately.
That ceasefire we've all been talking about has to start immediately.
I talked to NPR’s @HereAndNow about the latest in #Gaza.

Working for @LynnHastings has been one of the absolute highlights of my career in the UN. Professional, committed, hard working and kind - she's as good as they come.
Did you know that solar-powered drip irrigation is a cost-effective way to fight hunger?
In South Sudan, this project implemented by @DRC_ngo with partners helps farmers grow okra, eggplants, tomatoes, cowpeas.
With more income and better nutrition, it's transforming lives.
Globally, about 1 in 3 children are exposed to water scarcity.
We must protect children from the impacts of climate change, and durably fight hunger and malnutrition.
