Yesterday, Ghana took a major step toward protecting our marine resources and strengthening sustainable fisheries governance with the launch of a transformative three-year project to support compliance with the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies. The initiative, funded by the WTO Fish Fund and implemented in partnership with the Global Fisheries and Resilience Action (GFRA), was unveiled at a high-level meeting in Accra with the Fisheries Commission and key stakeholders in attendance.
This project is about building a more transparent, accountable, and resilient fisheries sector. It will help us tackle harmful subsidies that contribute to overfishing and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing, while ensuring that our fisheries remain productive and sustainable for future generations. Our implementation framework will focus on five key pillars: subsidies, biological sustainability, livelihoods, equitable distribution across the value chain, and strengthened governance systems.
To ensure effective implementation, the first tranche of funding has already been disbursed, and an 11-member steering committee has been established to oversee coordination, stakeholder engagement, and quarterly reviews. Through this initiative, we are reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to protecting marine resources, supporting coastal livelihoods, and meeting our international obligations in a way that benefits both our people and our economy.
Happy Mother's Day! Today, GFRA honours the fish processors, traders, and community leaders whose resilience and enterprise sustain Ghana's coastal communities every day. Their contribution is immeasurable — and central to everything we do. #MothersDay#WomenInFisheries#GFRA
This month, @GFRAglobal is in the field — holding dialogues with fishers, fish processors, traders, and coastal communities to hear what has changed, what persists, and what needs to change. Meaningful change begins with listening. #GFRA#CoastalCommunities#GhanaFisheries
GFRA welcomed Sonia Kwami, VP of @oceana in Ghana, today for an engaging exchange on potential collaboration: covering IEZ enforcement, fisheries reform, women's livelihoods & science-based reporting. Both organisations see strong shared interest and look forward to what's ahead.
As we continue to build the partnerships that drive our work, we revisit 21 April 2026 — when GFRA welcomed Curious Minds to our offices to reconnect and explore new ground in fisheries conservation, climate change & youth engagement. #GFRA#GhanaFisheries#YouthEngagement
Happy Workers' Day. Today, GFRA recognises the fishers, processors, and traders whose daily labour sustains Ghana's fisheries sector — and reaffirms our commitment to a sector that works for the people who make it work. #MayDay#LabourDay#GhanaFisheries#GFRA
Today we launch the #IEZET Project in Accra — strengthening IEZ enforcement, advancing transparency & securing Ghana’s fisheries future. Follow us for live updates.
Tomorrow, Ghana officially launches the IEZET project. Hon. Minister @emeliaarthur_ is expected to announce the project's commencement formally. Read more on our website: https://t.co/z3s5XtuvlJ
GFRA is proud to work alongside government, communities, and partners committed to securing the long-term health and productivity of Ghana's marine environment.
GFRA congratulates the Government, @emeliaarthur_, and the people of Ghana on a landmark milestone of the establishment of the Greater Cape Three Points Area as Ghana's first-ever Marine Protected Area.
This is a defining moment for ocean governance and marine conservation in Ghana. A well-managed MPA network begins with a single protected area, and Ghana has taken that first, historic step.
Ghana made history. The Greater Cape Three Points area is now Ghana's first-ever Marine Protected Area. But this is a beginning, not an end. Read GFRA's take on what comes next: https://t.co/7PBayah6xl #Ghana#MPA#OceanConservation#GFRA
