Recently disclosed letters between Sega and Nintendo during the height of the 90s console wars reveal that things between the two video game companies was more tense than previously thought.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Miyamoto shared details about Pikmin 4's development:
"We initially had planned for the game to release on the Wii U and it was nearly completed, but I realized last minute that there wasn't a dog in it. We then spent 8 years designing the dog."

LEAK: During development of Splatoon 3, Big Man was internally known as “Big Mandibles” as he was originally intended to be a giant stag beetle. When the developers realised all the stag beetles in the office fish tank had drowned, the character was dramatically overhauled.
In 2007, to promote the Wii, 600 Shigeru Miyamoto lookalikes were scattered around the US and tasked to climb into the windows of American homes to set up a Wii and covertly record the resident’s reactions upon discovering the console. 537 of the Miyamotos were arrested.
