What is written in destiny cannot be taken away by anyone. But it cannot be received before its destined time either. A recent example of this is the story of Shreyas Iyer.
Yesterday, when the squads for the Ireland, England, and Asian Games tours were announced, Shreyas Iyer was named captain. This is the first time he has been given the responsibility of leading India. He achieved this position by replacing Suryakumar Yadav, who had captained India to a World Cup victory just three months earlier.
Both Shreyas and Suryakumar are from Mumbai and have played cricket together. Shreyas began representing India in 2017, and there was a time during Virat Kohli’s captaincy when he was being groomed as a future captain. Back then, Suryakumar Yadav was nowhere near the Indian team setup.
However, after consistently performing well in domestic cricket and excelling in the IPL, Suryakumar finally broke into the Indian team at the age of 31. With his unique batting style, he quickly made a name for himself and became famous around the world.
On the other hand, Shreyas suffered a shoulder dislocation in 2021 and had to undergo surgery, which forced him out of the team. During that period, Suryakumar cemented his place in the side and went on to play the ICC T20 World Cups of 2021, 2022, and 2024. After Rohit Sharma stepped down, the T20 captaincy was also handed to Suryakumar.
Meanwhile, in 2024, Shreyas led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title. In the 2025 IPL season, he moved to Punjab Kings. Punjab had not even reached the playoffs since 2014, but under Shreyas’ leadership, he not only performed brilliantly with the bat but also guided the team to the final. His captaincy became a major talking point across the cricketing world.
Despite such outstanding performances, Shreyas still could not secure a regular place in the Indian T20 team because of Suryakumar. Both were middle-order batters, and usually only one of them could fit into the playing XI.
This year, Punjab had a fantastic start to their IPL campaign, remaining unbeaten in their first seven matches. However, they managed to win only one of their next seven games and eventually missed out on the playoffs. Even so, Shreyas played a crucial role in nearly all of Punjab’s victories. Over the last two years, he had also significantly improved his strike rate.
Because of these performances, it became impossible to keep him out of the Indian team. The selectors not only brought him back but directly appointed him as captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav in the role. Shreyas had last played a T20 International for India in 2023.
In the end, the lesson is simple: keep working hard. Whatever is written in your destiny will surely come to you when the time is right.
