1) Thread for today: I am not going to opine on the Supreme Court's ruling except to tell a story about a late and valued friend. The story will suffice for the sum of my thoughts about affirmative action.
I was working at the student newspaper at the University of Maryland...
One notable exception to this rosy picture is children with special needs.
Many of the schools that @NCGOP wants to expand voucher funding for do NOT accept students with IEPs (individualized education plan).
Public schools accept all children.

This NC school got $1.3m in public voucher dollars this year and @TriciaCotham and the @NCGOP would like them to get a lot more.
They only accept Christians and refer to LGBTQ students as "deviate [sic] and perverted."
They should not get public money.

Fun fact: I trusted my HS teachers with the knowledge that I wanted to use a different name (for reasons totally unconnected from my gender, not that it matters). This bill would make that trust impossible, and compel them to violate it. Hard to learn when you don’t feel safe.
PCS of Senate Bill 49 keeps Senate wording barring instruction on gender identity in North Carolina public schools in grades K-4 & requiring parents to be notified before a student uses a different name or pronoun. #nced#ncpol#ncga https://t.co/5pKAmHLOGy
Only there *was* time for public comment, as @RaSekel points out in this thread. @TriciaCotham just didn’t want to hear from the public. #ncpol#ncga

The Senate budget gives veteran teachers a raise of $125/year next year and the year after.
That’s not a typo.
$10 a month for dedicating their lives to serving North Carolina’s children. #nced#ncga#ncpol
Left, increases to voucher funding proposed by NC Senate. $500+m/yr by 2031, mostly to private schools.
Right, teacher raises proposed by NC Senate. $20/month increase for teachers with 14 years or more experience.
This is how you dismantle public schools. #nced#ncga#ncpol
@mrgonzalezPLC This is awesome, but they didn’t do that well because of one message on one board on one day. They did it because of how you build relationships and teach. 🤣
personal education savings accounts from being a program for children with disabilities to be for any student with no family income restriction listed to be eligible. Homeschool students would get funding of up to 28% of the avg. state per-pupil ADM allotment for prior fiscal
#nced#ncpol#ncga House Bill 420 filed today would essentially create universal access to North Carolina families to receive state funds to attend private schools or homeschool with more than $1 billion a year in new state funding. HB420 would revise the https://t.co/XpiT4laX2R
If you are a school or district leader, ask yourself, "Who's more likely to burn out out in my building, an educator who advocates for racial justice or one who refuses to embrace racial justice? That's a crucial measure of the realness of your equity leadership.
Happy Friday to everyone except the North Carolina legislators trying to force educators to out students against their will.
Our schools should be safe spaces for all children. #nced#ncga#ncpol https://t.co/VMklHwpEyS
@JustinParmenter @CTruittNCDPI Their goal seems to be the privatization of education in the state; forcing good teachers out of public ed is part of that process. The “hiring crisis” is not COVID-centered, and is only going to keep worsening. 😢
