#ATIKU2027: Power-Drunk President Olusegun Obasanjo Angrily Sacked Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala As Minister Of Finance, Called Her A Betrayer, Chased Her Out Of Nigeria; For Daring To Join Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Others, To Stand Against His Controversial Third Term Ambition; Was Ready To Bulldoze Anyone That Stood In His Way...

New reports making the rounds from very close sources, indicate that inside the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, in 2006, there was only one test of loyalty: The Third Term Agenda.

Two of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s most powerful Allies failed that test, because they chose to stand with the Nigerian people and the Nigerian Constitution.

Then Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was sacked as the Head of the Federal Ministry of Finance. Also, former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, was politically isolated and hounded.

Their "crime" was simple: They said NO to a Constitutional amendment designed to let one man rule Nigeria forever.

The official partnership between Olusegun Obasanjo and Atiku Abubakar began in 1999, as a rescue mission for Nigeria's democracy.

Obasanjo, just released from Abacha’s Prison, needed national acceptability. Atiku, a retired Customs Deputy Director turned Businessman and Governor-Elect of Adamawa State, according to close sources, provided the structure, the network and the resources, that delivered the North and key votes for their Presidential ticket in 1999. That initial investment of loyalty paid off for Atiku.

Their political party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, ticket delivered a landslide win with 18,738,154 votes, at the Presidential poll, representing 62.78 percent; and victory in 27 States and the FCT. It was the mandate that ended Military rule in Nigeria.

For seven years, the government worked. As Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, Atiku supervised the sale of over 145 public enterprises and generated more than 3.2 billion dollars for the Federation. He was also the stabilising bridge between the Northern and Southern PDP Governors.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, as Finance Minister from 2003, led the Team that secured 18 billion dollars in Paris Club debt relief in 2005. Under her, Nigeria’s economy grew and gained global respect. Together, herself and Atiku were the technocratic soul of the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration.

However, by late 2005, the agenda changed. The push to amend Section 137 of the 1999 Constitution to grant a President a third term began. Atiku broke ranks. As Vice President, he told President Obasanjo to his face that tenure elongation would destroy Nigeria's democracy. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala and the Economic Team knew that it would also destroy Investor's confidence.

President Obasanjo denied the agenda publicly, but the Bill was moving in the National Assembly. However, on May 16, 2006, the Senate buried it: 51 Senators voted NO, while only 16 voted YES.

The retaliation was immediate and clinical. On June 21, 2006, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala was removed from the Federal Ministry of Finance and posted to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a lesser Ministry. 63 days later, she resigned for the World Bank. She was Nigeria’s best at the time.

Elsewhere, Vice President Atiku was stripped of his portfolios, hounded by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and forced to leave the PDP in 2006. However, the EFCC did not find anything incriminating on him; so, he was never charged to Court for any crimes, to say the least.

In his book: "My Watch", Obasanjo threw the final stone, by continuing to lay several accusations against Atiku. Yet, till date, Atiku has not been indicted or convicted by any Court in Nigeria, or anywhere in the world, for any crime, whatsoever.

From removing four Senate Presidents, to declaring an Emergency Rule, to the 2006 purge, President Obasanjo’s record was clear: Zero tolerance for anyone who says NO to him as President.
