Agree with this. Very much a Silicon Valley mantra but I'd add that economic mobility is a very important concept to add to this and should be a goal as there are meritorious folks at every economic strata who normally don't get a shot at demonstrating their capability. That will increase our pool of talent. Also need to ensure that the not so meritorious have the ability to have a decent living as much as we can afford to.
I don't think DEI is "racism" but it definitely can have some major flaws that should be addressed.
I believe we should focus more on addressing socioeconomic differences rather than racial differences. Addressing socioeconomic differences, and trying to level the playing field there, will go a long way in helping with the racial differences.
People are are stuck in poverty, brought up in poverty have a hard time breaking out of it. That doesn't mean it's impossible but it is definitely a different starting point and disadvantage for many. Unfortunately many minorities fall into this category because of America's history of slavery and racism in the past, but addressing everything based on race can cause more problems and can punish those who shouldn't be punished.
Could approaching this from a socioeconomic standpoint maybe be the better option, and could it solve many of the problems that supporters of DEI aim to solve?
Opponents of attempts to give the state-educated 93% a fairer chance of getting into Oxbridge frequently conflate "the very best" with "those whose parents could afford fees" & therefore choose inappropriate analogies like the one below
A better analogy would be...

LOVED this debate. Two stellar speakers who provided great arguments on meritocracy’s value. Appreciated @adwooldridge’s perspective but Prof. Sandel wins this one. Thank you @intelligence2 for hosting the event! #meritocracy#socialmobility#equity
Meritocracy is under attack. Is it time we abandon the idea underpinning the 'American Dream' and the modern world?
Michael Sandel will argue yes.
@adwooldridge will argue no.
