Nothing racist here. What makes Europe a garden is functioning state institutions, rule of law, and democracy. This doesn't mean that Europeans are inherently better, it means that they take care of their lives as a collective. And those gardens can be found outside of Europe too
#GeorgiaCrisis: Borrell's statements and Michel's mediation efforts in #Georgia can be a case study as to how uncoordinated the #EU's foreign policy can be even at the interplay between #EEAS and #EUCO.
"The best answer to the crisis would probably be to hold an early election, but the outside pressure to do so would have to be overwhelming for this stubborn and secretive government to yield." #GeorgiaCrisis
🇬🇪 | In Georgia, A New Crisis That No One Needs
#Georgia’s government seems intent on shredding the country’s democratic credentials and waging an acrimonious political civil war on its domestic opponents.

Indeed the statement points at gov's role in de-escalation, but leveling it to the opposition's responsibility is wrong. Indirect calls like this diffuse responsibility, and can be counterproductive by protracting #GeorgiaCrisis. 2/2
Opposition in #Georgia were demanding snap election, because they deemed it manipulated. Now that the gov' responded by arresting one of their leaders, #EU urges them to enter the Parliament "to further consolidate democracy". Confusing. #GeorgiaCrisis 1/2

When opposition attempts 2 expose broken court/prosecution - it's wrong to call it a provocation. Calls for de-escalation/dialogue should be directed at GD, its affiliation to S&D shouldn't be a hindrance. #GeorgiaCrisis needs swift resolution. Swift resolution needs direct calls
The only way Georgia🇬🇪 can resolve this political deadlock is for all the parties to refrain from further polarising rhetoric/action and re-engage in dialogue.
#GeorgiaCrisis: opposition demanded snap elections, instead of re-elections; offered gov' to restart dialogue; postponed rallies. In return, GD brought back reactionary PM; refused dialogue; arrested #Melia. Int' calls for de-escalation should be specific, directed at ruling team
Following @EPP's suggestion for snap elections as a way out of #GeorgiaCrisis, now it's @ALDEParty President appealing to Georgian PM-designate to restart negotiations with the opposition, set a date for new elections.
📰 In #Georgia 'the next steps require engagement and an end to the political deadlock, not further punitive legal action', @hansvanbaalen writes to newly appointed Prime Minister @GharibashviliGe

"We categorically refuse any negotiations related to the snap elections, this issue is closed". He also adds that UNM not being in the Parl' is a unique opportunity. "It could have been our dream, but it happened naturally, by their own choice".

GD's decision to nominate #Gharibashvili as PM candidate was met with discontent from the opposition, who believed that he would escalate the #GeorgiaCrisis and deepen polarization. They were indeed right. Here are some parts from his speech during the vote of confidence. 1/5
Gharibashvili also claimed that in the aftermath of the Rose Revolution Georgia's economy was ruined, left in a hopeless state. 5/5

Georgia needs a restart and it can only mean snap elections. Snap elections doesn't necessarily require questioning #Gvote20, the legitimacy problem with other listed institutions is already big enough precondition. Hope direct calls like👇will cont.

#Georgia could be a leading country in the region but returns to persecution of political opponents, selective justice & instrumentalized judiciary. Snap elections & resumption of a dialogue between the government & the opposition should be considered a way out of the situation.

I recently did two interviews with @ViolavonCramon and @gahler_michael. Topics discussed: #Georgian Parl' crisis; GD's pledge to apply for #EU mem. by 2024; #Tbilisi's usual silence regarding the developments in the region (Navalny, Belarus); #COVIDdiplomacy, etc. Links 👇
