How can Micheál Martin say Katie’s case is not emblematic?
Emblematic means a clear example of something bigger.
So let me ask this.
If a child waiting 15 years for proper hip surgery is not emblematic of a broken system, what is?
If a young woman living with cerebral palsy, hip dysplasia, a twisted femur, a retroverted pelvis and a labral tear is left in pain while her family has to fundraise to get her to a surgeon abroad, what is that an example of?
If missed school days, missed milestones, years of appointments, reports, referrals, excuses and delays are not emblematic of failure, then what exactly would be?
Katie is not just “one case.”
Katie is a daughter.
A sister.
A granddaughter.
A 19-year-old girl who has spent most of her childhood waiting for someone to help her.
Her case is emblematic of every family who has had to beg to be heard.
Every parent who has had to fight through exhaustion.
Every child who has been left waiting until things got worse.
Maybe Katie’s case is not emblematic to people in power.
But to us, it is everything.
And if 15 years of pain, waiting and fighting is not a symbol of a broken system, then I honestly do not know what is.

I’ve shown Katie’s video to other people and they can see the difference too, so I know this is not just me imagining it.
Since her arthrogram last week, Katie’s posture looks worse. I saw it. Other people saw it. And now Katie feels it herself. She says she feels like she is leaning more to the side than usual.
That has scared me more than I can put into words.
Because this is what living like this does to you. You are always watching. Always waiting. Always terrified that the next change is the one that means things are getting worse.
My fear now is that this is going to put even more pressure on her spine.
And that is what is breaking me.
Watching my child’s body change. Watching time run out. Watching the damage creep further while we are still stuck here begging for help.
I do not want Katie pushed to the point where her only option is a hip replacement.
She is 19. She should be living her life. Instead, she is watching her body change, feeling herself leaning more, and knowing things are getting worse while we fight to get her the treatment she needs.
That is why I believe Dr Paley’s surgery is the best option for Katie. Because I want this stopped before more damage is done. Before her future is taken from her even more than it already has been.
The cruelest part is that we know where the hope is. We know who can help her. But we cannot get Katie to him unless we raise the funds to get her there.
Imagine knowing there is someone who could help your child, but being forced to stand still and watch her get worse because you do not have the money.
That is the reality we are living.
I am exhausted. Katie is exhausted. And I am begging people, please do not let this get any worse for her.
Please share Katie’s story. Please help us fight. Please help us raise the funds to get Katie to Dr Paley before it is too late.
