The Medical Council of India (now NMC) has banned doctors from promoting themselves on social media through ads, reels, and case-related photos to solicit patients.

But wait, young doctors (some of whom are not even doctors yet) are using social media like Instagram and YouTube to promote everything from skin treatments to weight loss plans, sometimes even random wellness products.

Some do it knowingly, others don’t even realize they’re crossing a line. Whether they know or not, if they are caught they can face suspension and their licence could be cancelled.

But today’s sad reality is that medical practice has turned into a social media branding contest where the number of followers matters more than experience and skill.

Meanwhile, the real doctors who stick to the rules are losing out on visibility while these social media influencer doctors are building massive patient bases. Is this how medicine should work?
