The fate of newborns in Auschwitz was tragic and changed depending on the period of the camp’s operation and the nationality of the child:

In the initial period of the women’s camp, all children born in Auschwitz, regardless of nationality, were murdered immediately after birth. Most often they were drowned in a bucket, a practice used, among others, by the midwife Schwester Klara, or killed with an injection of phenol into the heart.

Probably from May 1943, the killing of newborns of non-Jewish origin was discontinued. These children were registered as newly arrived prisoners, and their camp numbers were usually tattooed on the thigh or buttock, less often on the arm.

The right to live did not apply to children born to Jewish women. They were murdered immediately after birth until the end of October 1944, when the SS authorities decided to halt the mass extermination of Jews.

In sector BIIe, 378 Roma children were born. Although they were registered and initially received somewhat better food, milk, all of them died as a result of catastrophic conditions and disease or were murdered in the gas chambers during the liquidation of this camp in August 1944.

Some non-Jewish newborns, mainly Polish and Belarusian children, who met Nazi racial criteria, were taken from their mothers and sent to special centres for the purpose of Germanisation.

The chances of survival for children left alive were close to zero because of the extreme exhaustion of their mothers, who often had no milk. Newborns were not entitled to any special diets or layettes; mothers had to organise nappies themselves, tearing sheets into pieces and washing them in their portions of herbal tea.
