A reminder: the people in power don’t need conferences, treaties or agreements to start taking real climate action. They can start today.
When enough people come together then change will come and we can achieve almost anything. So instead of looking for hope - start creating it.

[Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur oPt @FranceskAlbs]

Human rights movements are the antibody of healthy societies and political systems.
From civil society, activists, workers, ordinary people, intellectuals: everyone is needed.

Recently I have been travelling through northern Kurdistan, and have met with Kurdish people from all different kinds of backgrounds. They told countless stories of the current systematic oppression and repression they face – especially from the Turkish state –, as well as a history full of massacres.

Destruction and exploitation of the nature – such as unlawful forest cutdowns, sacrificing zones for mining companies and fires – is one of the many tools used as part of the continuous attacks against the Kurds. This often leads to devastation of local communities and biodiversity as well as forced displacement. Erasure of culture and identity, state violence, political prisoners, forced displacement, ecocides and disappearances are just some examples of the discrimination people face on an everyday basis, as well as being denied the right to self determination and freedom.

To build genuine bridges of solidarity in Turkey, autonomy and self-governance for Kurdish regions are essential. The Kurdish people deserve the right to shape their own lives, culture, and communities.

Turkey must clarify its stance on the Kurds and other minority groups by enshrining their rights in the constitution. The government continues to use “terrorism” as a pretext to silence its political opponents. Tens of thousands of politically active individuals remain imprisoned without fair trials. International organizations such as the ECHR, UN, and Amnesty have condemned this and call for their release.

For a sustainable peace and a just future, the Kurds’ right to freedom and autonomy must be respected and the violent attacks against Kurdistan must end.

No one is free until everyone is free. Bijî Kurdistan!

As the COP29 climate meeting is reaching its end, it should not come as a surprise that yet another COP is failing. The current draft is a complete disaster. But even if our expectations are close to non-existent, we must never ever find ourselves reacting to these continuous betrayals with anything but rage.

The people in power are yet again about to agree to a death sentence to the countless people whose lives have been or will be ruined by the climate crisis. The current text is full of false solutions and empty promises. The money from the Global North countries needed to pay back their climate debt is still nowhere to be seen. The host country - Azerbaijan - is a repressive and authoritarian petro-state that has committed ethnic cleansing and genocidal acts towards Armenians. Civil society present at COP29 are being silenced, yet continue fighting and pushing negotiators towards the bare minimum.

All this while oppression, inequalities, wars and genocides all over the world continue to intensify. Those in power are worsening the destabilisation and destruction of our life supporting ecosystems. We are on track to experience the hottest year ever recorded, with the global greenhouse gases reaching an all time high just last year.

It is clear that our current systems are not working in our favour. The COP processes aren’t just failing us, they are part of a larger system built on injustice and designed to sacrifice current and future generations for the opportunity of a few to keep making unimaginable profits and continue to exploit planet and people.

With every negotiation, with every speech made by a world leader and with every agreement they sign, it becomes clear that it is up to us as a global collective to take the action we so desperately need and show where the leadership truly lies. They are not going to do it for us, as this COP29 yet again proves.

In recent years, the people of Georgia have flooded the streets, standing up against police brutality and the brutal crackdown on peaceful protests. They are determined to pursue a democratic future, yet their government is blocking that path. Instead of moving towards democracy, the government is adopting Russian-style laws that curtail freedom.

On October 26, Georgia held its parliamentary elections. The ruling party claims victory, but the civil society of Georgia, including election observers, has clearly stated that the results do not reflect the true will of the people. Widespread violations were reported, both before and during election day.

I stand with the people of Georgia in their call for a full investigation and for new, truly free and fair elections.

The world must pay attention. The people of Georgia deserve to have their voices heard. They deserve the chance to choose their future. This is not just their fight; it is the fight of every person who believes in freedom, equality, and justice. And we must stand with them.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has organised a demonstration against the #COP29 summit in Baku with Azerbaijani, Armenian, and Georgian activists.

[Greta Thunberg @GretaThunberg]

Today the climate meeting #COP29 starts in Baku. During Cop, the picture of Azerbaijan reported by the media will be a whitewashed and greenwashed version that the regime is desperate to portray. But make no mistake – it is a repressive state accused of ethnic cleansing.

🇵🇸🔊@GretaThunberg is amplifying our INTERNATIONAL CALL OUT: STOP FUELLING GENOCIDE 🔊🇵🇸

Join @filistinicinbin, @EEforpalestine and @palenembargo in their campaign - BP and SOCAR Stop Fuelling Genocide.

🛢They are uniting groups worldwide to take action against those fuelling the Israeli genocide against Palestinians.

🗓Tomorrow on the 11th November, groups around the world will rise up outside Turkish embassies.

❌Türkiye facilitates the transfer of crude oil to Israel via its seawaters or directly shipped from Turkish ports. This fuel is used to power the fighter jets and military tanks committing destruction in Gaza and Lebanon.

✊We demand the Turkish government suspend these oil shipments immediately.

👾This year’s COP taking place in Azerbaijan seems fitting to be used as a greenwashing tool to mask their complicity in fueling this genocide while also hiding a massive crime against nature.

Stand Against Authoritarianism, Greenwashing, War, and Capitalist Exploitation!

Place: Tbilisi, Georgia, Liberty Square (Pushkin Park)
Time: 19:00 local time, November 11th.

Join us as we rally against the wave of authoritarianism and exploitation sweeping through the Caucasus. Azerbaijan, using COP29 as a façade, is ramping up control under a false “green” agenda, tightening its grip on power, and escalating regional tensions.

For over 20 years, Azerbaijan’s regime led by Aliyev have kept people oppressed, fostering poverty, fear, and silence. This authoritarian trend isn’t isolated—across the region, people like Ivanishvili, Putin, Erdogan, theocratic regime in Iran are deepening control, stifling dissent, oppressing their own people and using war and ethnic cleansing against Armenians, Ukrainians, Kurds and other ethnic minorities to justify brutal policies.

Those who speak out—journalists, activists, scholars—are often met with imprisonment and violence. Under this system, climate action is reduced to corporate profit schemes, leaving people’s needs ignored and communities devastated.

The collective West’s role in this authoritarian drift is undeniable, as it continues to legitimise and finance oppressive regimes for the sake of energy and profit. By turning a blind eye to oppression in exchange for resources, Western powers are complicit in the repression and suffering faced by the people of the Caucasus.

The Caucasus Feminist Anti-War movement demand a future free from the chokehold of authoritarianism, war, and capitalist greed. We stand for real freedom, equality, justice, and a region where people, not profits, come first.

[Greta Thunberg @GretaThunberg]

“Where people face repression and rights violations every day, activists see a clearer connection... We can’t talk about the climate if we can’t even go out on the street and hold a sign. Climate activism and human rights are united.”

Indigenous peoples must speak up and take a strong stance against extractive economies that threaten life on the planet. It is essential to protect our ways of governance and maintain balance. Let’s learn to coexist in harmony with nature. Not everything can be about the economy at the expense of human beings. We need to seek an economy that preserves life and balance in our territories.

The climate justice movement must be a decolonial, anti capitalist, antifascist movement that fights against genocide as well as ecocide, that demands liberation and justice for all, and a system that puts people and planet over profit. 3/4
