Improvements in the small bay could create good winter habitat for fish, and terrestrial habitat improvements could benefit the forest ecosystem in general. As we move into the next phase of detailed design and engineering, restorative landscape design is a priority!
Last week, we gathered with staff from MN DNR, Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, Saint Paul Parks and Recreation, and Mississippi Park Connection to discuss how the River Learning Center project can improve wildlife habitat at the site.
The Great River Passage Conservancy is actively addressing this issue in Saint Paul, working to transform the city's riverfront and foster new connections between the community and the Mississippi River.

The way the river has been engineered - with many people living along the Mississippi unable to see the river itself - has led to a diminished connection.
We are so excited to be partnering with @urbanrootsmn in the East Side River District. We kicked off the partnership with a walking tour of Pig’s Eye Regional Park to experience the complex site firsthand and start to envision its future! 🌿
We are thrilled to share that Mississippi River Learning Center has received an American Architecture Award for 2023 by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies!

We plan to build on this momentum to advance implementation phases for the River Learning Center and River Balcony, launch community engagement for the East Side River District, and bring all three projects to life through community driven programming.
As #SaintPaul embraces the vibrant colors of fall, its connection to the #MississippiRiver becomes even more pronounced. The River Balcony will weave together the city's trails, bikeways, open spaces, and civic landmarks.
