Your Pastor is your servant in the Lord
Your Pastor is your brother in Christ
Your Pastor is your Father in the Lord
Quick things to note:
1.None of these are literal or mutually exclusive. Being ‘Father’ doesn’t mean you’re not also brother or even servant. They biblical metaphors that highlight different aspects of a Pastors work.
2.‘Father’ is synonymous to words like ‘example, prototype or training. It’s a biblical metaphor for one whose pattern in the Lord you follow e.g Abraham is called FATHER of all who believe (Romans 4:11). It simply means we should follow his example in believing (Gal. 3:6-7).
3.This doesn’t in any suggest Pastors should expect to be called Father. Nor does it make it remotely wrong that he is so called. A true man of God is not title crazy. His ‘greatness’ is in his service (Matthew 20:26)
Many are quick to quote Matthew 23:9 which says:
"And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven".
Let's discuss this objectively.
1.First, taking this as literally means that even our biological fathers should not be called Father. It says 'No man' doesn't it? Our biological parents are men aren't they? We do know however that Jesus did not in any way imply that it is wrong to call our biological fathers 'father'. The famous Luke 11:11 quotes Jesus using the words: " If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father...". The thought of this should challenge you to give the text a closer look. (Hint- it was particular reference to the Pharisees and for particular reasons).
2.All the Apostles appear to have a different interpretation Mathew 23:9. Otherwise they'd never have called anyone 'son'. But they did.
PAUL:
Galatians 4:19 KJV [19] My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,
1Co 4:15 For though ye have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.
(I’ve heard some say “Oh but Paul was old in age”. No. Paul was martyred at the age of 55.)
OTHER APOSTLES:
1st Peter 5:13 (KJV) The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you , saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
3rd John 1:3-4 (KJV) For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
FINAL THOUGHTS:
1.For the umpteenth time, insulting people for their religious views is ugly and vile. Stop it. It doesn’t speak well of you as a person.
2.1 Cor 4:15 proves that a man who has trained you in the gospel is actually your spiritual father, whether you choose to call him that or not. And no, it has nothing to do with age.
3. Every true Pastor in indifferent about these name tags. If you may, honor the way you see fit.
4. Jesus is coming soon. Stay watchful
A lady reached out to me to ask the question in this picture. I’m passionate about child growth and I almost always talk about it. I took permission from her to share my responses in this thread. Just a few points I could think of at the time because this is a nuanced subject.
