Spring in Newfoundland means wildlife on the move, including near roads and highways.
Slow down and keep an eye on the ditches when you’re driving. If you see one moose, there’s often another close behind. Pay extra attention at night, use your headlights and pay attention to warning signs.
As If you do see a moose, brake firmly and stay in your lane. Never swerve to avoid an animal.
A bit of patience behind the wheel goes a long way. Take your time and get where you’re going safely!

“Just a second” is all it takes.
Checking your phone, reaching for something or tapping a screen takes your attention off the road for longer than you think. And being distracted while driving can change lives in an instant.
Before you hit the gas, pick your playlist, buckle up and put your phone out of sight. Need something on the way? Pull over first.
When you’re on the road, give it your full attention, every time.

#GovNL is urging residents to plan a ride home, slow down, and drive sober this long weekend. Celebrate May 2-4 responsibly. Your choices help make our communities safer, for all of us.
When winter (finally) starts to thaw, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians know riding season has arrived. Soon the woods and trails across this province will be humming with the familiar sounds of quads, dirtbikes and other all-terrain vehicles.
Don’t get caught in the cold! Ride for the season we’re in.
Keep an eye out for unstable road and trail conditions. Melting snow, ice and rain runoff can leave the ground soft, uneven or washed out. Deep ruts, mud, hidden holes or standing water can quickly cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a rollover, especially at high speeds.
Always wear a helmet, ride sober and take your time. Make sure someone knows where you’re going and when you’ll be back. Be prepared and pack the essentials: food and water, medications, fire starting materials, communications devices and dry, warm clothes.
Remember: a safe ride today means plenty more good days ahead on the trails!

We’re in the thick of winter — but the ice might not be as thick as you think. Even when it looks solid, ice thickness and strength aren’t always visible.
Before you head out on skis, skates, or an all-terrain vehicle, check the ice where you plan to travel.
Provincial and federal safety guidelines recommend at least 15 cm for walking, 20 cm for skating or skiing, and 25–30 cm for snowmobiles. And that’s only when the ice is clear and consistent! Slush, snow cover, weather changes, currents, and tides can all weaken the ice.
Don’t take chances. Test the ice, stay alert to changing conditions, and remember that “just a quick ride” can turn dangerous fast.
