I’ve been to thousands of sporting events in my life — as both a participant and a fan — and I can say with zero hesitation: last night’s Tommies home opener was one of the best I’ve ever experienced.

My good friend John Tauer and his outstanding coaching staff had the team ready — no small task on such an emotional and high-profile night. From tip-off to final buzzer, they delivered.

Hats off to AD Phil Esten and his entire crew. They absolutely crushed it.

From the moving tribute to Lee and Penny Anderson during the opening ceremony, to the non-stop energy in a packed, beautiful new arena, to the halftime legend herself — Red Panda — the night was dialed in from start to finish. Usually, Red Panda is the show. But last night? She had competition. The fans, the team, and the facility all rose to the moment.

And let’s talk about that arena — world-class. Seriously. One of the best college basketball environments I’ve ever been in. Loud, modern, electric.

I brought my two sons and my grandson — Team Pivec in full force. This isn’t just a basketball game — it’s a full-on entertainment experience.

The Tommies beat a scrappy Army team 83–76 and showed flashes of what’s to come. And here’s the exciting part: they’re still a work in progress. This team is only going to get better as the season marches on and they prepare for Summit League play.

They’ll face a big early test with a quick turnaround and a Monday night tilt in Pullman, WA, against Washington State.

If you’re even a little curious about this team — don’t wait. Get to a game. The Tommies are building something special, and it’s a fun ride to be part of.
