Xie Zhenhua, China’s veteran climate negotiator, is expected to travel to Sunny Lands, California later this week for in-person talks with John Kerry. Sunny Lands is where Xi and Obama first met in 2013. The meeting will pave the ground for the Xi-Biden summit at APEC.
Positive vibes from today’s Kerry-Xie call. CHN read out mentioned exchanges on COP28 and the cooperative areas identified by the joint Shanghai & Glasgow statements. China’s methane plan may be another step to demonstrate good will.
NEW: Pepco will pay $57 million+ to resolve allegations that it discharged toxic chemicals into the District’s land and waterways for decades, resulting in the persistent toxic pollution of the Anacostia River.
This is the largest environmental settlement in DC history.

Yesterday evening, big batteries provided 5.2GW of instantaneous power to California's grid.
That's the equivalent of 5 typical nuclear plants.
The batteries were charged up on sunshine earlier in the day.

I am honored that my forthcoming book “Taiwan: A Contested Democracy Under Threat” has been endorsed by three leading experts on Taiwan.

@washingtonpost editorial board weighs in to endorse efforts by US and China to clarify intentions of respective actions and shrink space for misjudgment via sustained face-to-face communication.

🇺🇸🇨🇳 climate talks - Methane
BEIJING, July 20 (Reuters) - U.S. climate envoy John Kerry said on Wednesday that China was working on final approval to release details of its plans to curb methane emissions.
Kerry briefing media now. Key message: climate dialogue has been restarted with a sense of urgency. Subsequent meetings between the two sides over coming weeks. Both sides are working towards a “work product”.
China just experienced its highest temperature in recorded history, topping out at an unbelievable 52.2°C (126°F).
This crushes the country's previous all-time high by 1.7°C (3°F).
