If the Makerfield by-election was proof of concept of whether Labour can beat Reform, Burnham aced it, uniting the progressive vote and holding Reform to barely over its general election tally.
It means he will return to Westminster on Monday on a wave of optimism, with a story to tell Labour MPs anxious about Nigel Farage ending up in power, and the prospect of entering No 10 ahead.
As reported by the Guardian this week, Burnham will not challenge Keir Starmer in the coming days, but the PM will be asked to agree to an “orderly and managed” transition of power.
Burnham allies say it’s then up to PM to decide if he really does want a contest (he has said he would fight) or if pressure to stand aside becomes too great. If Starmer doesn’t, Burnham has the numbers to trigger one.
Another candidate - Wes Streeting or a loyalist MP who believes Burnham should be tested - could also join. But momentum is with the new MP for Makerfield, and it will be very hard to stop him now.
It was an honor to be @washingtonpost's first Sydney bureau chief. Unfortunately, I'm also the last. The paper is shrinking foreign coverage. I've lost my job. Worse, millions of readers will lose my colleagues' brilliant coverage. At a time of tumult, we need more info, not less

Today’s show was my last at CNN. My closing message: It’s never a good time to bow down to a tyrant… don’t give in to the lies. Don’t give in to fear. Hold on to the truth… and hope.
