There is so much going on in the Anthropic chart and so many assumptions to unpack, but switching from a radar to a bar chart goes a long way in revealing things like “how far do they believe they’ve diffused in different task categories against their theoretical maximum”
People forget that the three goals of data visualization are (1) to clarify, (2) to inform, and (3) to facilitate decisions, and the original choice, while aesthetic, accomplishes none of the three
(radar charts also imply MECE categories, and are designed for rapid comparison between options on a multidimensional set of metrics)
Starting a PhD is associated with a considerable worsening of mental health.
After entering their programs, students start seeking *a lot* more psychiatric medication for managing that bad mental health.

The attitude that helps most with intense stress is not mindfulness. It’s hope.
In hard times, it’s overwhelming to live only in the present. What brings strength is anticipating a brighter future.
Resilience lies in remembering that today's burdens may be lighter tomorrow.
What kind of childhood makes a top scientist? Is it enough to have all the right traits (brilliance, grit, etc) or do you need the right family too?
And why should we care? A 🧵 on our paper on the Nobel Laureates.
A teaser: the income distribution of the laureates' fathers.1/N
This August 2024 US survey of AI use confirms that AI is not just hype:
1) AI adoption is crazy fast by historical standards
2) It obviously useful to people in many industries. 25% people use GenAI at least 60 minutes a day at work, already
3) AI is being used for many purposes
@ligiabriz Excelente! Permitiría que todos esos casos de embarazos adolescentes fuesen manejados como lo que son, el abuso de una menor y algo a ser investigado. ¿Quien se opondría a una ley así? Debiese resonar tanto con progreso como conservadores
This is a wakeup call.
Our political rhetoric is too extreme.
The average Joe can't tell the difference between exaggerated campaign propaganda and truth.
As a result:
Millions of Americans actually believe Trump will end Democracy.
Millions of Americans actually believe Democrats are trying to usher in a new era of Bolsheviks and Communists.
And if either of those statements were true, violence would be a reasonable response.
But they aren't true.
We need to walk away from the ledge or else we'll see more actual political violence. And that's how those who would oppose us win.
Thank God Trump was spared today. This gives our country a second chance at re-evaluating our rhetoric and re-uniting under a shared love of country.
This may sound counter-intuitive, but today has opened my heart more than ever to my bleeding-heart liberal friends. We need to find common ground, and soon.
That's the one thing we can't compromise on.
An image that I've been chasing for a long time. After a late afternoon rain shower moved through #Pittsburgh, an amazing (nearly double) rainbow formed over the skyline and Mr. Rogers statue, making for an incredible summer scene. Lots of different angles coming as well.
@ashleyruba_phd LOL. I definitely feel I was more secure in my answers before starting my PhD. Not sure it is a bad change though, some humbleness and critical thinking is a valuable trait in industry and for an AI model, GPT-4 tends to oversimplify much less than 3.5 already. Thoughts?
Chiquita has such a dark history (as United Fruit Company) in all of Latinamerica (massacres, provoking state coups), continues to do very shady things and it is still quite popular in the US. Why? Lack of options? #chiquita#ethicalsourcing https://t.co/3QmYtJvQzt
Very interesting! Reminded me of the Milgram's experiment on obedience to rules and Loewenstein research on how we think different in a cold than hot state (how we think we will react doesn't match how we will react).
How women IMAGINE they'd react to sexual harassment is wildly different from how they ACTUALLY react when harassed.
Julie Woodzicka & @ProfLaFrance created sexual harassment in lab and tested how women reacted when harassed by a male interviewer in real time.
What happened:🧵
