A male coalition rarely holds a pride for more than 2 to 3 years, so the window to pass on his genes is narrow.

When a new coalition takes over, the incoming males typically kill the existing cubs in the pride, forcing the females back into estrus.

But females have evolved a collective counter-strategy.

When a new coalition takes over, a single female may mate up to 100 times a day, across an entire week, with all the males in the coalition.

This causes the females to enter their reproductive cycles in sync, give birth around the same time, & raise their cubs together in a communal crèche.

With so many cubs born around the same time, no single male can be certain which ones carry his genes, so all the cubs are treated as if they belong to all the males.

Male lions follow something of a golden rule: never kill a cub that might be your own.

With so many cubs in the crèche & no way to tell them apart, the males spare them all, each one assuming the cubs could be his.
