I still MASSIVELY disagree with this blatant character assassination (Sokka has never once run from even overwhelming odds without a group consensus, and on at least two separate occasions threw himself into a suicide mission)

but

What if Sokka is noping out of dealing with ocean spirit because he's The Other Man. La has a beef with him specifically for pulling the moon's attention, and Sokka is FULLY aware of his homewrecker status.
