One of the clearest signs of sincerity is consistency, especially when there’s nothing to gain. They’re kind even when no one’s watching, they keep their word even when it’s inconvenient, and their actions actually match what they say. They don’t have to keep proving that they care, you just feel it in the way they treat you. Sincere people don’t always make a big show of it. They just show up and mean what they say.

years ago in corporate America, a white coworker told me another manager thought I was “friendlier” than the other girls. Then she added that she’d noticed I wasn’t quick to get offended or "angry" when someone corrected me.

I knew she meant it as a compliment. But I got quiet. Because the “other girls” were Black women.

And suddenly I wondered whether I was being complimented for being friendly...or rewarded for not fitting someone’s stereotype of Black women.

Ironically, that perception helped me secure a mentor and ultimately benefited me professionally.

But I never forgot that conversation.
