with considerable time apart between the two series, I arrived at this one fully focused.
I decided that the pieces would all be completely and only ink drawn – start to finish – on fine drawing paper, arriving at an original with absolutely no digital intervention
OCEAN STUDY #2
this one was a very meditative piece.
I remember working on it slowly, it felt like breathing in and out
its also one of works from the “second wave” of the wave studies which I did 5 years after the first batch
originally intended for a small solo show in Berlin, it ended up as the poster image of the group show and program I partook in, “Facts & Fiction” @ Lenbachhaus museum in Munich!

I think its exactly that tension between digital geometric exactitude and human unpredictability that gives these drawing the spark
I added the original ink for comparison 🙂
OCEAN STUDY #1
a flood has to start somewhere, I guess. in my story, it was spouting from the ground in various corners of the world, I guess these whirlpools are part of it .. either way, I felt like drawing more oceanic phenomena other than just tidal waves
I remember taking two whole months for this particular one. no matter how finely I tuned it, it felt like I could go deeper.
u can see what I mean in this up-close detail
the end result is a splice between the original pen drawing an some photoshop vectoring
also, all images are inspired by meticulous studies of color photos. so things always starts with me sifting thru a bunch of surfing websites (they have the best waves!) or whatever Google spews out its end. THEN I kill the surfer and hail the new wave, long live!

WAVE STUDY NO.1
this ones b a s e d on the first sketch I drew. I also remember exactly how the sketch came about!
I literally just landed in Berlin that same day, Oct. 28 2008, and the first thing I do after putting my suitcases down is sit on and break my adapter

oh right, and something about the actual work process, well …
I guess its the closest I ever came to copying Hokusai. the idea tho, was to try and approach it from a more Westernized meets contemporary manga tradition
(4/5)
mind u, climate change was still practically sci-fi for most back then
anyway, this was the first finished drawing in the series. I even found the pencil sketch
also had it framed once and it now rests on a shelf in my room, accompanied by a duck from Kiki 🐤
WAVE STUDY NO.3
2008, pen ink
so, 13 years ago, December 2008, Im snowed in, a new arrival in Berlin, and I said to myself:
I shall draw the most epic ocean scene in history over 50 pages, like, Akira meets Noah!!
