What the DUBAI FUTURE FOUNDATION has accomplished since 2022 is nothing short of incredible, driven by the ambitious leadership of Khalfan Belhoul and a stellar team that’s fire: Patrick Noack, Isabella Pirolo, Eman Ebed Alkadi, and so many others on their team.

[Throwback Thursday: Future Soldier]

Among the science fiction futures and foresight projects I’ve worked on throughout my career, one particularly inspiring project comes to mind today: the report “CH-2050: The Future Soldier”, a collaborative effort developed over the years with @quentinladetto and Ufficio federale dell'armamento armasuisse, published by armasuisse Scienza e tecnologia.

This project was a rich blend of imagination, research, and yet more imagination. It allowed me and other involved professionals to explore advanced communication systems, combat exoskeletons, robotics, human-machine integration, cybersecurity, cyber soldiers, and, of course, the ethical and legal considerations that accompany these advancements — all framed by the strategic impact and evolving threats that may shape the future.

Exponentiality forces us to think not only about the short-term future but also about the long-term impacts, which can be far greater, much faster than they initially appear.

In foresight, exponential growth is key to understanding how the convergence of different technologies (like artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and the Internet of Things) can lead to large-scale changes faster and with deeper impacts than we are often able to conceive, and how those changes, in turn, create new layers of complexity our worldbuilding.

A classic example is the field of technology: many technological innovations, such as computing power, follow an exponential growth trajectory. The result is that technological capabilities don’t grow stably and predictably but instead explode rapidly and unexpectedly, with each advancement building on the last.

We are often used to thinking that change and growth happen linearly and gradually. However, many phenomena behave differently: they grow exponentially. To prepare for (and use) the futures, understanding the concept of exponentiality is crucial.

Exponentiality is the property exhibited by a trend whose scale of growth multiplies at dizzying rates in a very short time. In practice, this is when something doubles, triples, and grows at an increasingly rapid rate, creating disruptive effects and significant transformations.
