Special education is a civil right.

The Trump administration’s move to shift special education oversight out of the U.S. Department of Education is part of a broader effort to dismantle the federal agency responsible for protecting students’ rights in public schools.

For students with disabilities, this is not an abstract policy fight. It is about whether families can count on federal oversight when districts fail to provide evaluations, services, placements, accommodations and supports students are legally entitled to receive.

In Chicago, educators and families already know how hard it can be to secure the special education services our students need. Weakening the offices responsible for enforcing those rights will only make that fight harder.
Special education is not optional. Civil rights are not optional. Fully fund our schools and protect the rights of every student.
