Mavoko MP Patrick Makau, was apprehended this morning by security agencies at his residence following intel linking him to the yesterday chaos in which over 700 young individuals were allegedly hired to engage in looting, theft, vandalism, and disruption of innocent Kenyans' daily activities. 7 people lost their lives. The disturbances also involved damage to government infrastructure, including the protected Expressway.

Makau has gained notoriety for his strong-arm tactics and threats against leaders in Machakos County, employing plata o plomo' approach where those who dare to expose his illicit activities face severe consequences.

In a previous incident in July 2, 2020, Mavoko MP Patrick Makau faced arson charges related to the burning of a police post in Syokimau that was designated as a crime scene following the murder of Lawyer Willie Kimani. However, the case did not progress, highlighting the influence of "plata o plomo."

Another instance occurred in November 13, 2015, when Governor Alfred Mutua requested the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate Makau for his alleged involvement in an attempted land grab of 13,000 acres belonging to a company. Governor Mutua accused Makau, along with other senior officials, of engaging in "massive corruption" regarding the property of the East African Portland Cement Company. Once again, the matter seemed to meet a similar fate under the influence of "plata o plomo."

It comes as no surprise that given the opportunity, MP Patrick Makau would exploit peaceful protests to unleash hooligans.

He has a history of disruptive behavior, such as when he was evicted from Parliament for refusing to vacate Majority Leader John Mbadi's seat, displaying a confrontational and thuggish approach.

In 2017, it was reported that the MP purchased a helicopter worth 500 million Kenyan Shillings.

Makau is known to adopt the "plata o plomo" approach to control any development projects in his constituency. For instance, he once rallied Mavoko residents to oppose the fencing of Nairobi National Park in Embakasi village.

It's also alleged that he maintains a compromise office within his own office, which investors must navigate before initiating any business in his jurisdiction.

In October 2018, Athi River residents accused Makau of compromising their health by allowing London Distillers Kenya Limited (LDK) to discharge excessive raw effluent into the neighborhood.

Today, Makau's arrest in connection with the demonstrations that resulted in extensive destruction of government and private properties serves as an example of the consequences leaders face when they abuse their power to incite tribal conflicts and adopt thuggish leadership tactics.
