FOUNDATION DAY OF BHAVNAGAR:
Today is the 303rd foundation day of Bhavnagar city. Gohil dynasty Rajput ruler of Shihor, Bhavsinhji Ratanji Gohil, founded Bhavnagar on Akshaya Tritiya of 1723 AD. It was the time of the end of Mughal power and the beginning of Maratha power in Gujarat.
In 1722 AD, Maratha Sardar Kanthaji Kadam & Pilaji Gaekwad attacked the Gohil state of Shihor in Saurashtra. Its ruler, Bhavsinhji, forced the Maratha to go back. He considered Shihor unsafe. So he selected a village on the Khambhat Bay seacoast & started to develop it as his new capital, Bhavnagar.
Guhil/Gohil Rajputs were rulers of Khergadh in Marwad. In the 12th century, their last king, Mohdas, was defeated & expelled by Shiyoji Rathod from Kanoj. In 1250 AD, King Mohdas Guhil's grandson Sejakji Gohil left Marwad & came to Saurashtra.
In 1250 AD, an ancestor of the Bhavnagar, Lathi, Paltana, Rajpipala Gohil rulers, Sejakji, came from Marwad, Rajasthan, to Saurashtra. He was given the 12 villages Shahpur estate in Panchal by the Sorath king Ra'Mahipal. In 1250, Sejakji Gohil's daughter married Sorath Chudasama, the crown prince Ra'Khengar.
Sejakji's two princes, Shahji & Sarangji, served the Sorath king. In the 13th century, Sorath Chudasama king gave both princes, Shahji & Sarangji, 84 villages, Mandvi, now Lathi Jagir (estate), for their services rendered to the Sorath Chudasama king.
In the 13th century, Gohilwad's Gohil Rajputs' ancestor Sejakji Gohil founded Sejakpur town in the Panchal area of Saurashtra. His elder son, Shahji Gohil, founded Shahpur/Shapur town near Vanthali in Saurashtra.
The 13th-century Gohil Rajputs' ancestor Sejakji Gohil had 3 sons, Shahji, Sarangji & Ranoji and 2 daughters. One of them, Valamkunver, married the Sorath king Ra'Khengar. Palitana Gohil rulers & Lathi Gohil rulers were descendants of Shahji Gohil & Sarangji Gohil.
14th-century Ghogha-Umrala ruler Mokhdaji Gohil was the grandson of Gohil dynasty founder Sejakji Gohil & the son of Ranoji Gohil of Ranpur. Descendants of Mokhadaji Gohil were the Bhavnagar & Rajpipala states' Gohil rulers.
Family tree of Bhavnagar State Gohil rulers: In 1250, Sejakji Gohil came from Marwad to Saurashtra & founded Sejakpur.He died 1290 AD->Ranoji (Ranpur, died 1309)->Mokhadaji (Umrala/Ghogha, died 1347)->Dungarji (died 1370)->Vibhoji->Kanoji (died1420)->Sarangji->Shavdas (died 1470)->Jetoji (died 1500)->Ramdasji (died 1535)->Sartanji (died 1570)->Visoji (he shifted capital to Shihor. Died 1600)->Dhunoji->Ratanji 1st->Harbhamji (died 1622)->Govindji->Satarsalji->Akherajji (died 1660)->Ratanji 2nd->Bhavsinhji (founded new capital Bhanagar in 1723,died1760)->Akherajji (died 1772)->Vakhatsinhji (retired 1812)->Vajesinhji (died 1852)->Akherajji (died 1854)->Jashwantsinhji (died 1869)->Takhtasinhji (in his time Alfred High School in 1872 & Samaldas College in 1885 opened, Bhavnagar-Wadhwan & Gondal railway started in 1880. In 1893, the Victor (Pipava) Port & Takhateshwar temple were built under the rule of Thakhtasinhji. His Diwans were Gaurishankar Oza & Samaldas Mehta. Takhtasinhji died in 1896->Bhavsinhji 2nd (Died 1919)->Krishnakumarsinhji (last Gohil ruler of Bhavnagar, who ruled up to 1947. He died in 1965).
