Sometimes I walk into a business meeting and can almost feel the temperature in the room drop when people hear that the primary return on our investment is saving lives.
That breaks my heart.
Traditional business asks: “What is the ROI?”
I ask a different question: What return could possibly be greater than giving someone more life?
👉There are two defining moments in every human life: birth and death. We celebrate one and mourn the other. So why shouldn’t extending the distance between them—giving a mother more years with her children, a father another birthday, a child a future—be considered one of the greatest returns imaginable?
Yes, a social enterprise must be financially sustainable. It must generate revenue, grow, and survive. But money is the fuel, not the destination.
Maybe we need to rethink ROI.
👉Return on Investment → Return on Impact.
Profit measured not only in dollars, but in lives saved and years of life restored.
If saving a human life makes a business less attractive to an investor, perhaps the problem isn’t the business model.
Perhaps we have been measuring return with the wrong currency.
Fund the journey. Fuel the mission. Save a life.
