Those fleeing the Jim Crow South, the exclusion of Black people from New Deal benefits and later the GI Bill -- "there is a direct through-line of oppression and white supremacy in our history," Garcia said. "We need to know this."

"We, as Americans, have cheated ourselves of the full truth of our history, ignoring or eliding th painful stories that inextricably interweave and form the full fabric of our lives as African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans, Euro Americans, Latinx Americans."

• Dismantling artificial constructs of race and caste
• Knowing Christ crucified through the dark wisdom of the enslaved;
