25,000 indigent students benefit from Sen. Barau Scholarship

Across Kano North Senatorial District, a quiet but impactful educational intervention has been reshaping the future of thousands of young people.
Over the past three years, no fewer than 25,000 indigent students have benefited from the scholarship programme initiated by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin.
The initiative, which targets students in universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, has become a lifeline for many students struggling to remain in school amid rising economic challenges. Under the scheme, each university student receives N50,000, while students in colleges of education and polytechnics receive N20,000 each.
* 3,020 students benefited in 2023
The scholarship programme gained significant traction in 2023 when Senator Barau disbursed funds to 3,020 students across Kano North. For many beneficiaries, this marked the first time they received direct financial support for their education.
A beneficiary from Gwarzo Local Government Area, Ibrahim Musa, recalled how the intervention helped him stay in school. “At that time, I was on the verge of deferring my studies because I couldn’t pay some essential fees. The N50,000 I received changed everything for me,” he said.
* 9,857 students benefited in 2024
Building on the success of the initial phase, the programme expanded significantly in 2024, reaching 9,857 students across various tertiary institutions.
For students like Maryam Sani, a student of Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education, the support went beyond financial relief.
“This scholarship helped me buy textbooks and cover my transportation for the semester. It reduced the burden on my parents and allowed me to focus on my studies,” she explained.
The increased number of beneficiaries reflected the growing commitment of the lawmaker to ensure that no indigent student in Kano North is left behind.
Beneficiaries rise to 10,694 in 2025
In 2025, the scholarship programme recorded another milestone, benefiting 10,694 students. The beneficiaries cut across universities, colleges of education, and polytechnics, further consolidating the scheme’s position as one of the largest grassroots educational interventions in the region.
At Bayero University, Kano (BUK), 1,052 undergraduate students were among the latest beneficiaries. The event, held at the Convocation Arena, drew widespread commendation from students and stakeholders.
One of the beneficiaries, Rukayya Yusuf Adam, a 400-level student, described the scholarship as timely and impactful. “We are grateful for this. This is not the first time we have benefited from Senator Barau’s scholarship. He has been supporting us consistently every year,” she said.
Similarly, Sadiq Abdullahi, a student from Makoda studying at a polytechnic, noted that the N20,000 support he received helped him pay for practical materials.
Student leaders have also acknowledged the broader impact of the initiative. The President of Kano North Students at BUK, Comrade Lawal Salisu Gwarzo, described Senator Barau as “the father of Nigerian students,” citing his consistent investment in education.
Beyond the yearly disbursements, the scholarship programme is part of a wider educational support system championed by the lawmaker. These include sponsorship of postgraduate students abroad, support for doctoral candidates within Nigeria, and scholarships for undergraduates across institutions.

Their immense contributions to national development and unwavering commitment to uplifting lives cannot be over over emphasized.

I had the honour of attending a meeting convened by a former Chief Whip of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Bello Hayatu Gwarzo with his top loyalists and former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who joined him in the largest political party in Africa, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano yesterday.
You will recall that Senator Gwarzo, a distinguished personality, who contributed immensely to the development of our country through the National Assembly, recently joined the APC following his defection from the PDP.
I have always seen him as someone who remains committed and energetic, continuing to contribute meaningfully, including through his role as a traditional title holder and his support for various communities in our senatorial district and beyond. It was therefore commendable that he joined us, following wide consultations, alongside his loyalists and supporters.
To me, the gathering is a strong signal of greater unity and strength within our party as we continue to work for the progress of our people.
Troops Rescue Wife of Retired General Rabe Abubakar in Katsina, Intensify Offensive Against Bandits
Troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA have rescued Mrs. Abubakar, wife of retired Maj.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar, following a shootout with armed bandits in Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Military sources exclusively told Zagazola that the operation, conducted under Operation CLEAN SWEEP III, followed intelligence-led offensives launched in Matazu and adjoining communities after the abduction incident involving the retired senior officer and his family.
According to the sources, troops made contact with the bandits at Tunga village during a search-and-rescue operation, forcing the armed group to flee after coming under heavy military pressure.
“The bandits shot her and fled when we made contact at Tunga village. We have rescued Mrs. Abubakar. She is bleeding, we have given her first aid and are moving her for urgent medical attention,” a military source said.
The source confirmed that the rescued victim was immediately stabilised by troops on the ground before being evacuated to a medical facility for further treatment.
Military authorities said follow-up operations have been intensified in the area, with troops sustaining a coordinated pursuit of fleeing bandits and suspected kingpins believed to be responsible for the attack and earlier abduction.
They added that the ongoing clearance operation under Operation CLEAN SWEEP III will continued until all criminal hideouts are dismantled.
Security sources assured that the military remains committed to tracking down those responsible and ensuring they are brought to justice.

One of Senator Barau’s most significant legislative contributions is the establishment of the North West Development Commission (NWDC). The commission is designed to tackle the region’s long-standing developmental challenges, including poverty, infrastructure deficits, and environmental concerns. It is expected to catalyse coordinated and sustainable development across the North-West.
Maliya as Senator Barau is fondly called sponsored the bill for the establishment of the commission.
* Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo
To expand access to higher education, Senator Barau sponsored the bill for the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo. The sponsorship of the bill led to the conversion of Federal Polytechnic Kabo to Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo.
It would be recalled that it was Senator Barau who facilitated the establishment of Federal Polytechnic Kabo and now he has to his credit the conversion of the institution to a university
The institution is expected to promote science, innovation, and technology-driven education, while also boosting local economic activities in Kano North, Kano State, North West geopolitical zone and the country as a whole.
* Foreign Postgraduate Scholarship Programme
Senator Barau has facilitated foreign postgraduate scholarships for dozens of graduates in specialised fields such as Cyber Security, Forensic Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. This intervention has helped the beneficiaries further their studies and acquire skills in cutting-edge fields in line with the 21st century.
Through the Barau I. Jibrin Foundation (BIJF), 70 students from across the three senatorial districts of Kano State were selected for the first batch of scholarships. Some of them have completed their studies and returned home, while the rest are expected to return within a short period of time.
The initiative is aimed at building a highly skilled workforce to fast-track the development of the country.
* Domestic Scholarships for Students in Tertiary Institutions
On the domestic front, thousands of students from Kano North studying in various universities and other tertiary institutions have benefited from cash grants. This has been ongoing for many years. Each Kano North student receives N50,000 annually to cater for registration and other academic expenses, courtesy of the People's Senator.
* Distribution of vehicles to party and community leaders
To enhance grassroots coordination and engagement, vehicles were distributed to party leaders and key stakeholders. Among them are state party leaders of the APC, chairmen and secretaries of the 13 LGAs in Kano North, and elected local government chairmen, among others.
