Yesterday as people were leaving Brooklyn Pride, an investment banker at Moelis named Jonathan Kaye assaulted multiple women—breaking one woman’s nose and sending two to the ER.
Heres a gorgeous evocative image of a woman not reading but writing. The cover of Shama, a massively successful Urdu periodical with circulation figures far surpassing any others. Also one of those archival regrets - a magazine I wish I could have worked on!
@AriaAber Anyway sucks to argue with ppl who take it personally when you bring up The Least that we owe the Palestinian ppl…
Some ppl make art for AirBNB so
@AriaAber Personally I also survived a communist regime and came over with 0 dollars but like, I don’t think my self righteousness / personal experience/ concept of my role as a writer …..is more important than a live stream genocide done in my name and with my tax dollars.
This morning, students at Columbia University picketed outside the homes of three trustees.
At two of the three locations, random harassers suckerpunched student picketers. At one, a car drove into a student. NYPD arrested the student, who’s now with EMS.
Every student protesting should know these three things:
1. You are a ray of hope for Gaza: Every person I’ve spoken to in and from Gaza has told me they were losing hope in international solidarity, until these protests started. They said the encampments are their main (for many the ONLY) source of hope now.
2. Your pressure is working: Despite what the US government is saying publicly, under the table these protests have forced them to urgently pursue a ceasefire, including significantly increasing pressure on the Israeli war cabinet.
3. Boards of Trustees across campuses are now divided, with some shifting towards divestment, and asking themselves the question of: Why risk everything to protect weapon companies and war criminals?
Given this rising impact, different tools of deception and oppression are going to be used to shut down your momentum.
Maintaining your eyes on the prize, your unity, coherence of messaging and the moral high ground are central.
You are at the forefront of the struggle for freedom and dignity. Millions across the world have your back.
Until Victory.
It's been 195 days. Over 41,496 people have been killed in Gaza and the West Bank. Over 1,139 people have been killed in Israel.
Keep calling, keep writing, keep shutting shit down: https://t.co/mypOO5QncN
⚡️ The death toll of a Russian missile attack on the city of Chernihiv on April 17 has risen to 15, with 61 people reported injured, including three children, the State Emergency Service said.
i’m so moved by the authors who have withdrawn their works from PEN consideration. it’s courageous to reject the opportunity to be considered for $75,000, life changing money for most writers! happy to support @mayabinyam@EugeniaLeigh @hystericalblkns @guszeineddine
@mosquitxmuertx Hi! That is so sweet. Sometimes I miss the work too but time only moves forward. Have you read the work of Rene at embodied astrology? Alice sparkly cat? Rose of Mutable Cross? Clair of Madame Clairvoyant?
These people are all doing wonderful work
Honestly can’t believe ppl still go to awp after the first year of covid. The way they handled that was so unconscionable. And everything after. And everything after.
During the siege of Mariupol in 2022, The NYT wrote that Russia was using an "ancient warfare tactic to try to starve" the Ukrainian city.
But since Israel invaded and tightened its 17-year siege of Gaza, weaponizing mass starvation, the paper has failed to assign blame.
THREAD: In 1937, the Nazis exhibited art they deemed “Degenerate” in order to mock it. I was looking through a list of these amazing artists the Nazis hated, and I was ashamed at how many of them I didn’t know, so let’s look at their work together! Here’s Alexej von Jawlensky.
