By 1918, women's protests against the pass laws had spread throughout the country. A group of women, led by Charlotte Maxeke, established Bantu Women's League (BWL) in response to the threat of the Orange Free State government to reintroduce passes for black women. The BWL’s work included representations to the authorities through delegations, meeting with the prime minister and other officials, and through appearing before commissions of inquiry on the indignities women suffered from carrying the night passes. As a result of these efforts, pass law enforcement for black women in the Free State was relaxed followed by the eventual exclusion of women from pass laws on a national basis in 1923. Speedy had decided to go solo and completely sever ties with the group.

Now the band is back to being the 3 guys again.

Speedy came back. We recorded an album in 2019 and realized soon after that our working styles and dreams for the future of the band didn’t match so I continued doing what I had been doing since 2003 when Zabalaza was recorded. ( which by the way only happen through many meetings with Kalawa agreeing that I wasn’t leaving just recording a solo album. )

Anyway. There wah.

Charlotte Maxeke, (1871-1939), defied the odds and became the first black woman in SA to graduate with a university degree from Wilberforce University, Ohio, 1903) and the first African woman to graduate from an American university! A pioneering educator, a passionate social and political activist, attending the launch of the South African Native National Congress (now ANC) in 1912 . Maxeke fought tirelessly against pass laws, advocating for the rights of her people and paving the way for future generations. She cofounded (with her husband Rev Marshall Maxeke) the Wilberforce Institute in 1905.
