Using the 2014 film ‘Pride’ to explain what we mean by ‘solidarity.’ Here is our response to Benjamin Netenyahu’s speech at the US Congress.

Today, Benjamin Netanyahu, compared the slogan, “Gays for Gaza” to “Chickens for KFC.”

The comment received rapturous applause from Senators and members of congress of both parties.

The reason he made the remark, and the reason the clapping seals in congress lapped it up, is simple. The concept of solidarity is something that has always been alien to conservatives.

Perhaps the best way to explain it would be through a true story made popular by the 2014 film ‘Pride.’

In 1984, gay activists in London noticed the police were harassing them far less than had been the norm under Thatcher’s government. The reason the police were leaving the LGBTQ community alone, is that they were focusing their hostility on picketing minors.

Those same gay activists then decided to fundraise in support of the minors and their families. When they tried to hand the money over to a mining community, they were met with fierce opposition and were told over and over, “We don’t want help from people like you.”

But, after countless rejections, a spokesman for the minors of Onllwyn, South Wales, came to a gay bar in London to accept the donation from the newly founded ‘Lesbians & Gays Support The Minors’ or LGSM.

Despite some initial opposition, a friendship grew between the two groups and in 1985, London’s gay pride parade was joined by hundreds of Welsh minors in a show of solidarity.

A year after the minors strike ended, gay and lesbian rights were enshrined into the Labour Party’s manifesto, pushed through in part by the National Union of Mineworkers.

When LGSM was founded, they could never have anticipated the support they would eventually receive from the minors, but they helped them anyway, because it was the right thing to do.

Now back to Gaza. A lot of words are put in the mouths of the Palestinian people by the western press. We are often told how they feel and what they believe.

Queer people who speak out against Israel’s genocide are confronted by smirking conservatives who dare them to go to Gaza and see how they would react.

The truth is, many Palestinians will be homophobic, they may even wish death on the LGBTQ community. But many other Palestinians won’t be.

To talk about an entire nation of millions of people as if it has only one mind and one opinion is to deliberately mislead.

And anyway, who knows what Gazan’s really think and feel. They are trapped in an open air prison being picked off by one of the most advanced militaries in the world. We are constantly told by western commentators exactly what is in the hearts and minds of the Gazan people. Very rarely are those Gazan people ever asked to contribute.

Maybe if queer activists went to Gaza they would face hostility. Maybe they would even be killed. The Queer community are not ignorant to that. They know it all too well. But the concept of solidarity is so deeply ingrained in LGBTQ history that they will still stand with the Gazan people anyway.

That’s what solidarity means. Standing up for an oppressed people even if they wouldn’t do the same for you. Even if they might still wish you dead.

Whatever is truly in the hearts and minds of the Gazan people. They do not all deserve to die. The killing must stop.

That is why Benjamin Netenyahu’s “Chickens for KFC” comment and the smattering of applause it received in the US congress will boil the blood of so many queer people.

A sadistic butcher taunting those who would dare ask him to stop the genocide, can never and will never understand what solidarity means.
