🇪🇸🇲🇦 Morocco’s hostility toward Spain may have less to do with migration, and more to do with Algeria

Just days before the Ceuta crisis, Pedro Sánchez travelled to Algeria for the first time in 4 years to repair relations, expand energy ties, boost investment and revive high-level strategic cooperation.

That matters because Algeria is Morocco’s regional rival, the main backer of the Polisario Front and the country standing on the opposite side of the Western Sahara dispute.

Spain has seen this movie before. In 2021, Madrid allowed Polisario leader Brahim Ghali to receive medical treatment, Morocco recalled its ambassador, relations collapsed and thousands of migrants suddenly crossed into Ceuta.

Morocco also still refuses to recognise Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla, so migration pressure is not merely a border-management problem, it can also function as a very convenient geopolitical pressure valve.

There is currently no public evidence proving Sánchez’s Algeria visit triggered the latest crisis.

But pretending the timing, the 2021 precedent, Morocco’s rivalry with Algeria and its claim over Ceuta are all completely unrelated would require an impressive commitment to coincidence.

The commander of U.S. European Command has privately warned the Pentagon that he does not have enough naval forces to continue defending Israel against Iranian ballistic missile attacks and may soon have to prioritize defense of the U.S. homeland unless another Navy destroyer is assigned.

The warning from Gen. Alexus Grynkewich underscores the growing strain the Iran war has placed on U.S. military resources. The Washington Post reports that near-daily operations have stretched the Navy's destroyer fleet, while previous reporting from The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Reuters has detailed mounting concerns over dwindling stocks of Patriot and other air defense interceptors needed to protect U.S. forces and allies.

The Pentagon declined to comment on the correspondence, but officials told the Post the warning reflects the military's process for alerting senior leaders when operational risks begin to exceed available resources.

💢 The vessel is the Bermuda-flagged GASLOG SHANGHAI (IMO: 9600528), owned by CL Gas Three Ltd. Greek-based GasLog manages the vessel's commercial operations as the disponent owner.

💢 Notably, GasLog is the same company whose LNG carrier GASLOG SALEM (IMO: 9638915) was struck by a UAV of unknown origin at Egypt's Damietta Port last week.
