This is a photograph of gravity waves.

However, these are not the gravitational waves that propagate through spacetime; rather, they are a phenomenon in Earth's atmosphere that—somewhat inconveniently—shares the same name. In English, the terms differ slightly: "gravitational wave" (referring to General Relativity) and "gravity wave" (referring to fluid dynamics and the atmosphere).

In Earth's atmosphere, gravity waves serve as a mechanism for transferring momentum from the troposphere to the stratosphere and mesosphere. They originate in the troposphere, triggered by atmospheric fronts or air currents flowing over mountain ranges.

This image of Earth's night side, captured by the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instrument on the NOAA-20 satellite, shows atmospheric gravity waves radiating outward from a typhoon. Resembling ripples on the surface of water, these waves are visible to the instrument thanks to the atmosphere's own faint glow (airglow).
