I don’t have much political or economic wisdom, but I have devoted my entire adult life to studying ancient Western culture. Nothing has helped me understand the world we live in better than learning Latin and reading the primary texts of our tradition directly. Secondary literature and commentaries are useful in some—few and select—cases. The real gold lies in the living words of our ancestors: Cicero, St. Jerome, Thomas Aquinas—you name it.

If, like me, you sometimes open a modern book and, after 400 pages—or worse, after a three-hour podcast—still feel intellectually indifferent, adrift, and empty-handed, give an ancient book a chance. The reading will be arduous and slow, but in the end it will feel like opening a chest full of gold coins.

And if you truly devote your time and attention to rereading it until you understand it—perhaps jotting down its most memorable passages—it will become a treasure you carry with you always. A piece of tradition will live on within you, and you will come to understand more and more clearly the history of the ruins that surround us—not those left behind by the ancients, but the ruins of modernity among which we wander.
