@smarge_pt@Bray_Brayyy@PTJournal@physiobade It can be quite variable depending on your focus. For instance, I had colleagues that focused on biomechanics consider jobs at companies like Nike while others (outside of biomechanics) sought jobs at start-up technology companies focused on rehabilitation.
@sunsopeningband@doc_doc_pru@physiobade From a data perspective, the dataset provided did not have specific information on tenure. We did include a survey to program directors to help inform 'time to promotion' and found similar time points for those in Research positions and those in non tenure teaching.
@Bray_Brayyy@PTJournal@physiobade Many opportunities exist outside of academia. A lot of PhD trainees pursue industry in their respective areas of focus.
@smarge_pt @NIH_LRP 3. Great question! And unfortunately one I am unsure of. I would anticipate there is some variance by program and by University but would be interesting to look into. #PTJChat#DPTtoPhD
@smarge_pt 2. Students loans can make the impact of reduced short term earning greater as the reduced ability to pay off this debt can result in increased debt via interest. However, there are additional options such as @NIH_LRP that can help offset this.
@Bray_Brayyy@PTJournal@physiobade However, there are ‘part-time’ PhD programs for those individuals that have factors that may prevent them from being in a ‘full-time’ program. This can allow additional earning opportunities by continuing clinical work. #PTJChat#DPTtoPhD
@Bray_Brayyy@PTJournal@physiobade Different personal life needs are certainly a large consideration when electing to pursue a PhD and the type of PhD training. Within the analysis, we only represented a ‘full-time’ PhD that did not involve extra income such as PRN work.
@melliinnnaaa@PTJournal@physiobade@Bray_Brayyy Great question. If the interest is in a PhD program related to Physical Therapy ACAPT has a great resource of associated programs https://t.co/HWjx8j6HX3
@Bray_Brayyy@PTJournal@physiobade For instance, if this individual feels they would receive more career satisfaction out of a career associated with PhD training then I think it would be worth pursuing a PhD despite the lack of break even.
@Bray_Brayyy@PTJournal@physiobade With this question, I want to emphasize that while we examined financial implications, finances should not be the only consideration when opting to pursue a PhD.
