Brazil Blocks Trump's Election-Sabotage Squad as Authoritarian Regime Tries to Export American Fascism and Steal Another Democracy

Brazil just slammed the door in the faces of two Trump regime operatives because it refuses to let a proven election-denying authoritarian export his grift south of the border.

Brazil's Foreign Ministry denied visas to Riley M. Barnes (Assistant Secretary, State Department Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor) and Samuel Samson (Deputy Assistant Secretary of State). The reason? Brasília correctly smelled a coordinated plot to sabotage its upcoming presidential election the same way Trump and his allies have tried to poison confidence in every election they lose.

Officials close to President Lula da Silva say the planned "election integrity" junket was never about integrity. It was part of a deliberate campaign by Jair Bolsonaro's sons — especially Eduardo Bolsonaro, living safely in the United States — to pre-emptively discredit the vote if Flávio Bolsonaro loses in October. Classic authoritarian playbook: claim the system is rigged before the ballots are even counted, then scream fraud when the results don't go your way.

The State Department confirmed the two officials were scheduled to travel next week for meetings that supposedly included "election integrity." They of course deny any intent to undermine Brazil's democracy. Of course they do. That's what they always say while running the exact same scam Trump is currently trying on America's midterm elections.

The red flags went up hard when Flávio Bolsonaro started parroting Trump's greatest hits to diplomats: claiming Brazil's electronic voting machines come from the Venezuelan company Smartmatic and are therefore ripe for fraud. Brazil's election court shut that down cold — Smartmatic has never supplied machines used in Brazilian elections, and international observers have repeatedly found the system secure. Yet the Trump-Bolsonaro axis keeps recycling the same discredited conspiracy theory because the truth is inconvenient when you're preparing to reject any outcome that doesn't put your preferred candidate in power.

Every serious democracy on earth has watched this movie before. Trump is a convicted criminal and serial election-denier who tried to overturn a free and fair American election and is still pushing the same poisonous lies at home. Now his fascist authoritarian regime is caught trying to export the tactic to Brazil. Brasília did the only rational thing: blocked the agents of that effort at the door.
