Just to say... Alex was a truly wonderful person by all accounts. It is important to keep this post and all comments about HIM. Please. For this one post. Do this in memory of Alex. Because one cruel and final indignity that is visited upon those who have had their lives stolen is the fact that the unforgivable act can end up defining that person in the public eye by that very act itself. Who the person was can be lost amidst the tragedy. Alex was someone I would have loved to know. I wish I'd had that great privilege and I know he comes from an amazing family. They will read these comments most likely. So please be mindful of that.

VIEW POINT: Former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar is not a happy person. He had recently been warning that LGBQT+ rights are facing a ‘chill wind’ in Europe under pressure from both east and west. He is referring to the new US administration and the rollback in LGBQT+ rights as he sees it. He noted that there was a widespread anti diversity rhetoric and that major US corporations were pulling back from ‘pride’ events and that US diplomats were no longer attending these events that once were ‘the mainstay on their calendar’. He is also concerned about rollback in Russia. He describes Putin as having ‘embraced a particularly conservative form of Christianity’. This is what he means by pressure from East and West. He described Europe as being ‘squeezed’ stating that ‘we have to defend what are our European values and our charter of fundamental freedoms’. I would see a major difference between EU values and European values, the EU has consistently promoted a liberal neo Marxist ideology embracing of anything that undermines national states and their historic moral foundations rooted in Christianity. Ordinary European values are on a wide spectrum but generally appear to me to be more socially conservative than the EU version.

Currently Dr Varadkar is a Senior Fellow at the Carr Ryan Centre for human rights which is affiliated to Harvard University. This allows him to indulge in his interest in all things LGBTQ+, draw a decent salary and speak with the authority of the Carr Ryan Centre and thereby drawing on the prestige of Harvard. The Carr Ryan Centre sees it as its mission to ‘educate the next generation of leaders from around the world in human rights policy and practice’. Part of that mission involves LGBQT+ advocacy where future leaders in LGBQT+ advocacy are trained. Perhaps we can now see why the Carr Ryan Centre sees Dr Varadkar as the right fit.

What seems of particular concern to Dr Varadkar is that the very countries that were to the forefront in liberalising LGBQT+ laws are now the very countries that are rolling them back. The obvious example is the US. I would agree with his opinion but as a Senior Fellow I would have expected some analysis as to why this is now occurring.

No analysis or explanation is offered because of course the truth may well be politically incorrect.

I know of very few people who would deliberately set out to be mean to anybody. But respect is a two way street. There is a careful balance between the private life and what is good for society as a whole. Over twenty years ago LGBQ participation in society became more mainstream. ‘Gay’ marriage was legislated for in the Netherlands in 2001 followed by Ireland some years later. With privilege comes responsibility. Instead radical politics entered the world of LGBQ advocacy. The ‘T’ for transgender was added on with further relentless demands around remodelling society to align with transgender ideology with their seventy plus different genders. For good measure a + was added to take care of any future expansion of this radically politicised agenda.
