In my third and final year of postdoc, I can faithfully say this position has served me zero benefits beyond being able to add a line to my CV. I can’t wait to be done with these people.
@MuradChristine They keep gaslighting me into believing this is normal and want me to finish the fellowship.
I had to write a letter to the president of the uni for permission to teach off campus to at least get some experience on my cv.
Is it normal for a postdoc to never ever meet the professors or students and only deal with the admin office as an extension of the office? (Setting up schedules, laptops, etc…)

The guy in charge of my budget refuses to read the entire document and give feedback. He stops at a point he dislikes, sends a reactive email. Waits for it to be resolved. Reads until the next point, sends a reactive email. Rinse repeat….

@jes_hooper In the post talk networking event, “oh, my PD place had an opening and they just offered it to me” was the answer I got the most when I asked for advice on job applications. It’s making me rethink my entire career. 2/2
@jes_hooper Attended a conference recently w/ a panel titled: “associate or perish”. I can’t afford to keep traveling to these things, and I come from a small program with a smaller cohort. 1/2
International conferences are a special kind of torture, and after proving that they can happen online, going back to in person is just doubly painful.
@AcademicChatter If a journal holds your article for three years and only answered two emails in those three years saying it’s publishing soon, and has ghosted you since early 2023, is it fine to submit the article elsewhere?

When your institution has you shelved in a windowless office where you do work that literally affects no one and they refuse to let you exchange hours to deal with a family emergency but the other person was allowed to do so to go on holiday last month.
Trying to navigate academia alone when you’re 10k km away from your home and family is a special kind of brutally.
I think I’m ready to go home and start again. There’s only so many rejections I can take while being this alone.
I am not lonely, but I feel very alone.
Until my field acknowledges that a certain demographic that only hires its own demographic is in charge and freezing everyone out, we will never evolve and survival this cultural shift.
Wanna bet that the PhD on campus who attacked the BAs for their political views will be rewarded with a Professor position while the rest of the cohort was told we don’t hire our own and you have zero chance to have a job without a PD fellowship.
People don’t value writing the way they do art. Otherwise, they would be as protective about AI in publishing and translation as they are over art.
People are very proud of their use of AI in school, journals, translation, fiction, and you never see the same backlash as those
in art receive. Educators are ridiculed over trying to detect AI, and students put more energy into cheating with AI than actually learning the material.
Just because everyone can use language, it doesn’t mean AI is valid. It’s like saying everyone can doodle so why not use AI
