Today in Relief Society, a mother shared that she sent her teenage son to a week-long church camp with a friend of another faith.

For the entire week, he was barraged with criticism from the other kids about his beliefs.

At the end of the week, the pastor was answering anonymous questions in front of the whole group. One of them was something like, "How do I convince my Mormon friend that he's wrong?"

There's a reason our missionary efforts are so successful. It's because our philosophy is simple and pure—love, share, and invite.

I would be so disappointed if a friend of another faith came to one of our activities, and instead of being embraced with open arms was treated like a pariah.

There's a sign on all of our chapels that says VISITORS WELCOME and we really mean it.

Here’s the thing — LDS folks are, on average, great people. They are kind, generous and genuine.

These are the fruits by which Christians are known.

Doctrine means nothing without a well ordered heart. And lately, I’ve seen far too much disorder from self proclaimed Christians in their anti-LDS bigotry to be convinced of anything they have to say about doctrinal matters.

If your heart isn’t ordered in Christ, frankly, I don’t give a damn what you have to say about doctrine.

After perusing 25,000 comments in the past two days, most of which attempt to explain why Americans are voting for Communists, socialists, and antisemites in record numbers, I’ve done the only rational thing a man in my position can do; I’ve agreed to go on Real Time with Bill Maher this Friday to talk about it.

I was also inspired by all the "sturm und drang" to make a quick commercial that highlights one of our many scholarship recipients who mastered a trade, and then went on to open her own business. Her name is Maryssa, and while I have no idea what her politics might be, I can assure you that her attitude, her initiative, and her work ethic are proof positive that the American Dream is still in reach, for any who would grab it and go.

When I was Muslim, we had an awesome story where Abraham was smashing all the pagan idols.

Surah 21. Young Abraham destroys his father’s idols, leaves the biggest one standing, and when they ask who did it, he says “ask the big one.” Then they throw him into a fire and Allah makes it cool.

I was told that story a hundred times. It felt like proof Islam had the real Abraham.

Yesterday I found the story’s birth certificate.

Genesis Rabbah 38. A Jewish midrash — rabbinic storytelling — compiled around the 5th century AD, before Muhammad was born. Same plot. Abraham smashes the idols. Blames the biggest one. Gets thrown into a fire by Nimrod.

And here’s the detail that wrecked me: the fire comes from a rabbi’s wordplay. Genesis 15:7 says God brought Abraham out of “Ur of the Chaldees.” “Ur” can sound like the Hebrew word for fire — so a rabbi spun a story: God brought Abraham out of THE FIRE.

It was a PUN. A sermon illustration to help you understand. Jewish folklore built on a Hebrew word.

And it ended up in the Quran as history.

Genesis — the actual account — has no idols smashed, no furnace, no Nimrod showdown. It has something better:

Genesis 15: God makes a covenant with Abraham, and God ALONE passes between the sacrifice pieces. Meaning: “If this covenant breaks, I pay the price.”

Two thousand years later, on a hill outside Jerusalem, He did. He paid it in FULL.

The midrash gave me a story about a man surviving fire.

The Quran took a shell of that and added it as scripture.

The Bible comes through with a God who walked right into the fire for both YOU&ME.
