@Gabrielle1473 Exactly. Two different venues catering to two different audiences. Some people are looking for a live experience, while others just want to dance to a DJ playing their favorite songs. Again, I think it comes down to what's available to the fans.
@DarcyL20 Also, some people don't like seeing their favorite bands live because they say it sounds nothing like the album. Which is kinda the point of a live show. Not saying I agree with them, but that is usually their reason.
#POPMUSS21 Wald has a point. I do think most present-day pop fans are content to just listen to music on their phone, or some physical medium if they prefer that. Yet young people still go to dance clubs to hear DJ's and live music, so I think it depends on what's available.
@Gabrielle1473 I agree that "schlock" music does degrade the artistic value of the original songs. Certainly a lot of it has not aged well but, like anything, some good music did come out of it. So I don't think schlock rock is totally without merit.
@McloughlinDevin That's a good point. This music, while ethically questionable, was made for strictly commercial reasons. For record companies, It's all about the bottom line. They're not concerned with integrity.
#POPMUSS21 While I acknowledge the cultural theft in "schlock" rock, I think it's wrong to dismiss the genre entirely (as it is culturally significant), even if it's just a watered down imitation of other artist's music, and designed to be more commercial.
@CaitlynBaikie Absolutely, pop music still requires creativity, lyricists, arrangement, etc. And I agree most pop music is designed for mass consumption (not to mention advertising), but I just think that points to a less-demanding audience/public.
@Jonatha42014013 Good point. I think you could also say that much of popular music today is simply shallow, lyrically and musically. I realize pop music isn't supposed to be too complex, but it seems very surface-level and ephemeral.
#POPMUSS21 I don't think popular music necessarily appeals to a passive audience. I do think it is "dumbed down" is the sense that it is designed to reach anyone of any demo, and I don't completely disagree with Adorno in his assessment of the culture.
#POPMUSS21 # Three albums I would NEED to have with me on a desert island:
1.) Over-Nite Sensation - Frank Zappa & The Mothers
2.) The Evil One - Roky Erickson & The Aliens
3.) Animals - Pink Floyd
