In honour of today's British Grand Prix, I am posting one of my favourite sketches from A Bit of Fry & Laurie, which not only stars the terrific two, but was written by them as well.

Stephen Fry was supposed to mime or pull the punch at the end, but he accidentally connected. You can see by his reaction immediately after, as he looks surprised and slightly concerned. Cracking right hook!

Oxfordshire County Council has become the first council to start a legal battle to ban residents from raising flags.

The reason given is that it makes ethnic minorities feel "intimidated."

18 June 1815 - Today marks the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

On this day, the British Army under the Duke of Wellington, fighting alongside its allies, defeated Napoleon and brought an end to his ambitions in Europe. Waterloo became one of the greatest victories in British military history. British infantry stood firm under relentless attack throughout the day, enduring artillery bombardment, cavalry charges and repeated assaults before finally driving the French army from the field.

The name Waterloo became synonymous with courage, discipline and determination. It cemented Wellington's place among Britain's greatest commanders and remains one of the defining moments of the British Army's history.

We remember today the soldiers who fought and died on the fields of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. 🇬🇧

I have to say that Clarkson's Farm is one of the finest pieces of television ever created. I started watching it for Jeremy doing stupid Clarksonesque shit, but then it became something deeper and more important to an entire community of Farmers across the UK, and subsequently to us, those who forgot how important farmers are to our country.

Clarkson himself, never afraid of being made to look like a knob, opened our eyes and his to the warts and all reality of farming. The show laughs and cries at and with him. Crafted drama could never carry the same pathos as watching a Journalist becoming a farmer.

I think I speak for a lot of people when I say this.

For years, Sunday nights meant Top Gear. We’d sit down at 8pm and watch Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May do what they did best.

Now, through Clarkson’s Farm, Jeremy has introduced a whole new generation to the realities of British farming and earned the respect of millions all over again.

He’s made us laugh, he’s frustrated us, and he’s entertained us for decades.

Orwell was pointing out a type of person who sneers at their own country as if that makes them clever. Not because they’ve thought deeply about anything, but because they think mockery itself is a mark of superiority. The tone of it hasn’t changed. The same kind of people are still here. The same smirk. The same false performance of being “above” England.

You see it across media, universities, arts, politics - this little ritual of laughing at everything English: the history, the songs, the traditions, the parades, the accents, the villages, the old ways of doing things. As if scorn is the height of sophistication.

Meanwhile the ordinary Englishman hasn’t changed. He doesn’t make a spectacle of loyalty, but it’s there - in how he speaks about home, in how he looks after his own, in how he stands when something needs to be stood for. It’s quiet, steady, and real.

The divide Orwell talks about is still obvious:

There are those who feel duty and belonging.
And there are those who think they are above both.

What’s living in the UK like? I’ll tell you. In the last week alone we have had to process:

-an attempted beheading by an illegal migrant from Sudan in Belfast
-while still trying to make sense of a boy, Henry Nowak, being stabbed to death while police were more anxious about allegations of “racism” than trying to save his life
-then we learn children in Scotland were assaulted by Bulgarians while the police didn’t believe them either
-while reading that a vulnerable 18-year-old was r*ped by an asylum-seeker from Pakistan
-while an asylum-seeker from Iraq got only 6 years for r*pe
-while an Iraqi national, was found guilty of eight counts of r*pe and grooming children as young as 12
-and his friend from Iran who arrived illegally skipped bail and is on the run
-and now we learn that a teenage girl has been stabbed in the neck by no doubt “a local man” in Burnley.

That’s one week in the UK. Oh, and the Left say talking about all this is “divisive”, they blame social media and Elon Musk, and local councils have told us not to fly our national flag because it might “intimidate” migrants. One week. The UK. 🤡
