My first attempt at a medieval illumination using genuine pigments and a handmade brush. Mostly done with red and yellow ochre with green earth and a little lapis lazuli, all bound in gum arabic.

Scribes in #medieval Ethiopia were important in social hierarchy. They didn’t have to pay taxes ግብር, be in the military or farm. Traditional #Ethiopian title for Prime Minister is ‘ፀሐፌ ትዕዛዝ which translates to “"Minister of the Pen or Scribe by Command' @britishlibrary

Scribes don't often feature in early #medieval manuscripts. An exception is the illuminated Codex Vigilanus (copied in late 9th-10thC Hispania): it not only gives a prominent place to the scribe responsible for its copy (Vigila), but also to his collaborators Sarracinus & Garsea

Finally got to use my new scribes display at Nottingham Castle this weekend for a 12th century display. The pigment board was very well received by the public and the double layer writing board proved very useful. Sadly I had to stow away my best charters due to the rain.

@FoloWatkins 4. That’s an inkhorn set into the double knee board, there is a small mixing spoon in there.
5. The pots contain lapis lazuli pieces and cherry tree gum.

@FoloWatkins They aren’t in the pictures, but I got them out for the public to see. It was too wet to risk them getting dripped on in the heavy rain.
