Ghanaian Students in Hungary Lament Over Government's Failure to Pay their Monthly Stipends for the Past Six Months

Ghanaian students studying in Hungary are facing a challenging situation as the Ghanaian government has allegedly failed to pay their monthly stipends for the past six months. The students, numbering about 215 and comprising undergraduates, masters, and PhD students, are expressing their distress over the situation.

According to a press release from the Ghana Students Association in Hungary dated 4th April 2024, the students are struggling due to the non-payment of their stipends, which is part of a bilateral scholarship agreement between Ghana and Hungary. While the Hungarian government has reportedly fulfilled all its obligations under the agreement, the Ghanaian government's failure to provide stipends has had severe consequences on the students' academic performance and mental well-being.

The students have made several appeals to stakeholders in Ghana, including the Government of Ghana, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, but have not received any response. They are urging the authorities to expedite the process of paying their stipends and book allowances to enable them to cope with the rising living costs in Hungary and focus on their studies.
