As demand continues to grow across emerging markets, Roberto Lorato, Commissioner, MedcoEnergi, shared insights into the opportunities and challenges of delivering secure, reliable and affordable energy for long-term economic growth during the session 'Rising economies, rising demand: How the next industrial age gets powered'.

Reflecting on the region's energy outlook, Lorato highlighted the strength of Southeast Asia's growing energy demand while emphasising that unlocking investment requires not just capital availability, but the ability to develop projects that are commercially viable and scalable.

"Each part of the world needs to move at a certain pace depending on the priorities. In Southeast Asia, there is increasing demand for energy of all forms. In our experience, in trying to promote investment in renewables and solar, we have seen that actually capital is available on paper, but translating that capital into bankable projects has sometimes been a difficult challenge."

The transition to lower-emission shipping will depend on scaling infrastructure, unlocking investment and strengthening collaboration across the maritime value chain.

Takeshi Hashimoto, Director & Chairman of the Board, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, James Sagar, CEO, Hanwha Shipping, and Nikos Tripodakis, COO, Capital Clean Energy Carriers, joined moderator Eithne Treanor for a Strategic Leadership Executive Panel examining sustainable maritime infrastructure, fleet capacity and the adoption of lower-carbon fuels.

"I think LNG is the bridge solution. There is a trading network for LNG, there is a significant number of LNG vessels, and there is also the capacity to build further on it. When it comes to other solutions, I think they are either ineffective or very expensive. Pragmatism is the key word, and LNG is the fuel that leads us through that transition." – Nikos Tripodakis, COO, Capital Clean Energy Carriers
