The key regulatory question is whether sports prediction markets are federal event contracts or state-regulated sports betting.
Recent CFTC developments suggest a more permissive path for aggregate sports outcomes, including match winners, final scores, point differentials, tournament advancement, and team/player stats — all core World Cup market formats.
This strengthens the @Polymarket /@Kalshi argument that these products are not just sportsbook-style gambling, but tradable event contracts that provide real-time price discovery.
In this framing, World Cup markets become a liquid pricing layer for global sports attention, with potential utility for broadcasters, sponsors, fantasy platforms, analytics firms, and other sports-adjacent businesses.
The World Cup @FIFAWorldCup could be Polymarket’s sportsbook breakout moment.
Promo codes appearing across sports and betting media suggest @Polymarket is moving beyond crypto-native users and into traditional sportsbook acquisition channels: sports media, affiliate traffic, and bonus-driven conversion.
Polymarket recorded $553M in notional volume in the first week of the World Cup, from June 8–14.
At that run-rate, a 39-day tournament could generate ~$3.1B in trading volume, and that is before the natural pickup as matches become more decisive later in the tournament.

@Kalshi has constantly generated slightly higher taker volume than @Polymarket so far (13/6: 72.9M vs. 57.8M), likely helped by the fact that this year’s World Cup is being hosted in North America, which is a market that aligns closely with Kalshi’s heavily US-centric audience and its existing strength in sports such as the NFL, NBA, and MLB.
That said, Polymarket’s user base appears far more international, especially across regions where football dominates attention and betting activity.
With Polymarket also increasing its presence across mainstream sports media and affiliate channels, its World Cup volume could plausibly converge toward Kalshi’s level as the tournament progresses.
