England v Argentina in 1998.
Watched in an English bar in Barcelona, so packed you needed to know half an hour before when you needed the toilet or a drink.
TV signal was lost at 1-1 in the penalty shootout when a neighbour allegedly cut the connection in protest at the noise…
What's been your most comically bad viewing experience watching an England game?
In 2018 we watched a game in a place under a trainline and the tv cut out every time a train went over
Good luck to everyone ploughing through. I start work at 8am, it’s the busiest day of the week and there are morning deadlines to hit.
Most crucially, I could do a day on reduced sleep when I was 28 and, probably, when I was 38. At 48? No bloody chance… #worldcup
From memory of Spanish TV almost 30 years ago, they showed the players going off for half-time and then cut to 14 minutes of adverts.
Post-match lasted about two minutes because they used to do a three-hour highlights show on Sunday night once all the league games were played.
Seeing gripes about ITV and BBC World Cup coverage.
Contrast that with here in Spain where:
Many games have no studio shows, just ad breaks and basic in/out.
Even Spain game now only has low production pregame and HT on Dazn.
Most games not free to air.
The UK has it v good
Can the World Cup just hurry up and kick off? Today’s random press release is a list of ‘the most beautiful players ranked by science’.
It’s something to do with maths being used to measure facial symmetry. Nope, me neither…
According to the TV guide, the one remaining MTV channel features programmes such as Dating Naked, Just Tattoo Of Us and Teen Mom: The Next Chapter.
(I actually felt my IQ dropping as I typed out those names)
After more than four decades on the airwaves, MTV is shutting down its music channels in the UK and across Europe - a sign of changing behaviour by consumers in the streaming and digital age.
It marks the end of an era in pop culture.
Turning 21 years old, seeing my 48-year-old dad asked for ID when buying a beer in the USA and, on the same holiday, hearing a wedding reception on a boat where the couple’s first dance was to that Celine Dion song from Titanic…
#OnThisDay in 1997
Valeriy Lobanovskyi's Dynamo Kyiv side thrashed Barcelona 4-0 at the Nou Camp
Andriy Shevchenko & Serhiy Rebrov did the damage with Shevchenko scoring a first half hat trick
Eighteen-year-old me wouldn’t be envious at all. Half my A Level Spanish classmates didn’t fancy five days in Barcelona, so we had to make do with joining two other schools for a Spanish-speaking weekend at Crowden in the Peak District…
Today’s apparently 30 years since I started at @UniofStaffs so just to show you all how different life was then:
Liverpool had paid a British record fee for a striker.
Nottingham Forest had qualified for Europe.
Oasis were on tour.
The Beatles had an Anthology project looming.
I didn’t think I’d be doing more #stockportcounty stories 10 years after giving @JonKeighren and @GarethE77815055 much-needed space in some of the Skrill North press boxes but there we go…
